I'm doing my first engine rebuild and I yanked the old rear main seal and reinstalled the new one. All the documentation I've read said the seal needs to be flush. What does that mean? I hammered the hell out of it with a 2x4 and it's still not flush like the one I yanked out. I'm worried I damaged it in the process. Is the thing installed correctly? Included some pics below. The engine is a gm 262/4.3l v6.

Gently pry it out make sure it's not all bent to shite and reinstall it the other way, or get another one. You can tap them in but a rear main seal installer is the tool of choice on those vortec v engines.

Not to hate on OP because I sure as hell wouldn't tackle a project like this but

Good to know. I couldn't find anything on install direction and my guess seems to have been wrong. I'll pull it out and most likely get a new one tomorrow. Thanks!
