My neighbors in New Mexico are having a lot of puma sightings on their properties. I've always known puma are around, but this is the first time my neighbors have warned me about them.

I got out on the place all the time - walking, riding a horse or four wheeler. I always have my dogs with me (all bigger dogs) but usually no gun. I would not trust my pistol shooting, but I am a good shot with a rifle with an open sight.

Do I need to carry a rifle at all times? One of my neighbors has told me to keep a rifle in a scabbard when riding or carry a rifle when walking. I'm not scared and I'm confident the dogs would alert on one if one was around. I've seen bears a few times and have never had any issues.

I am very watchful for predators, especially around the creeks.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I never go into the woods without a gun, ever. Not so much because of animals but because of people. Even when I'm fishing or paddling a river.

But I also live in Alabama where there aren't puma. I'd at least have a sidearm of some kind. If you're on a horse or ATV I suppose a lever action (30-30 or .35 Rem) would be best.

You're not gonna get killed or attacked by a puma, mountain lion, or cougar. Continue with your recreational activities as the dogs will scare away the cat. If it makes you feel any safer, carry a pistol as any "shots fired" will definitely scare them away.

In the last 100+ years, 2 people (3 yr old boy and a 55 yr old man) were attacked and killed by a Mtn Lion in NM.

I wouldn’t go anywhere these days without a firearm, especially alone in a remote area. Regardless of location. Can’t help you on the puma question. Only puma I’ve ever seen around here was on a pair of tennis shoes.

Getting attacked by a big cat would be incredible rare

Using a weapon to protect yourself in that rare case would likely be ineffective tbh

There’s virtually no chance of being attacked based on statistics.

There also nothing you can do if one decides he wants to sneak up and eat you.

Drug running would be more of a concern for me.

True. The Jicarilla Apache Reservation is not far but it does not have the meth problem anywhere near the extent some of the other reservations have.

What you need to do is not worry about the lions, but apply for the late season archery mule deer tag in that area. You also need to take up elk hunting and fill your freezer. Where did you grow up?

If that cat wants to get you, you will never see it or hear it coming till it is too late.

Bear spray is pretty easy to keep around hiking, camping, etc. I’m just as comfortable with it as my pistol.

I’m not really familiar with pumas out west, but here in south Louisiana we have a huge black panther population, I personally don’t feel safe in the woods without my judge and my creedmore

I know when tracking wounded leopard the firearm of choice is 12ga with buckshot. Puma seems to have similar soft hide build. Shotgun would also give some margin of error.

I feel confident a buckshot to the face would be effective if I was attacked. I get they are stealthy but people notice them all the time stalking them. Unless OP is both blind and deaf, as long as he is aware of his surroundings, he’ll notice a cougar stalking him, at least early enough to get his gun ready

Your dogs with alert you to the presence of a puma. No weapons necessary. Your only concern would be Homo sapiens. I only have black panthers here in the Florida panhandle so I never carry a gun.
