Question regarding bluefin tuna

Saw an episode on the discovery channel where they were selling tuna on the east coast for big $.
Does fishing like that exist in the GOM? Seems like it would be pretty profitable if you could harvest a big bluefin every so often and sell it to market.
What are the regulations like in the gulf and what is their market value along the gulf coast?

There is a small population of Bluefin who come into the Gulf in April and May to spawn. Most of it happens in the Loop, about 100 - 150 miles south of Venice.
It seems like every year a #1000 pounder would get caught out there in a big tournament. The Miss Cathy caught a big one about 10-12 years ago.
The limit used to be one per vessel per year. But I think now it is No Take.
One interesting question is: If they spawn in the Gulf, who don't we catch any juveniles here? The only other known spawning location for Atlantic Bluefin is in the Med. So there's a good chance that the US east coast population is born in the Gulf but spends most of its like in the Atlantic.
That's about all I know with a reasonable degree of confidence. But the data is very thin.

Can't they be caught in the gulf and brought into a different country? Are those regs for the USA? What about commercial vessels?

It's kind of a weird system still. You're allowed to keep one trophy (over 73") per year as long as you have a tuna permit, weren't intentionally targeting it, and the sub-quota isn't filled.
Commercials have a different set of rules and I won't act like I understand them, but in general there aren't enough of them in the gulf to actually target. Most are caught as by-catch by longliners and are likely sold quietly with the rest of the haul. I doubt there's quite the organized network of buyers like there is in the northeast, just because they aren't brought in that often.
I generally make 4 or 5 tuna trips a year and over 5 years I've only been lucky enough to see a bluefin blow up on some bait from way far away one time.

Josh Howard is the best bluefin charter captain, or so I hear.

The GOM is closed to Bluefin tuna fishing. If one hooks on to one, you have to release unharm. They shut it down around 7 years ago. Some clown tried to weight in one a few years back. BUSTED.

They recently added a little bit of wiggle room to the regs, but targeting them is still illegal. Must be hooked targeting other species. Each rec permit is allowed one fish in the trophy class per year, but the quota is tiny and it's your responsibility to know if it's been filled or not. Basically better have huge balls and a sat phone if you bring one on board.

Only recently, thanks to TBF, has the government allocated a quota for bluefin tuna caught by anglers in the Gulf. The quota is small, only 3,306.9 pounds, which can be filled quickly with a few large bluefin tuna.

Who is the jack wagon that set this? Why not just say 4 or 5 fish a year?

It's a percentage of the overall quota for the whole Atlantic, government gonna government.

Because that simple solution would not require a team of "experts" to head out on the water for several fishi.....errrr, "sampling" expeditions and spends hundreds of thousands of dollars every year on "research".
