What does everyone have?
Is it best to reinforce a closet or laundry room with re-bar and concrete with a steel door?
Or just buy one of those Ground Zero storm shelters that they put in your garage?
Or just a basement?

Friend of mine in Oklahoma has the master bedroom walk in closet as a reinforced storm room. He said it was easier to get the kids in there as opposed to trying to get them into the garage where his storm room was at his old house.

Thank you. That seems like the best idea.

We have a cinder block and rebar room in our basement. It is underneath the front porch, and about 12x8. Plenty of room for us to get in there if we have to. Some of my wife's relatives out near Jasper AL have one of those in-ground shelters. It is pear-shaped, and has a hatch on it that you can lock from the inside. A few steps down, and it is circular in the bottom with a bench all the way around. They put a couple of those tap lights in there so they can see. I'm not sure how much they cost, but they're right in the path of all the storms that roll through there in the spring and fall. Some houses on there street have been leveled in the past, and they've taken some heavy damage over the years. You can easily fit 5-6 adults in there without being too cramped.

Do y'all have any survival items in the shelter already, like perishable food, helmets, bottled water, tv/radio, lamps and flashlights, generator plus firearms?

I have flashlights all over the place. I have a couple of those strap on headlamps in there, a couple gallon bottles of water, an axe, bike helmets, and a wind up flashlight/radio thing. And there might be a firearm or two in there. But they may have been lost while fishing.

I want to find a good Honda silent generator. Did you get your axe from a home improvement place or a outdoor place?

Either Lowe's or HD. I was digging out some old box shrubs several years ago and my wife had gone to pick out some ground cover to plant in its place. I had two massive root balls that were not coming out easily so I shot her a text to buy me an axe. It is just a normal polymer handled axe. Nothing fancy, I just needed something to chip away at the edges until I could get a shovel under it to remove it. I've used it hundreds of times since then. I even used it backwards, sledgehammer style, to knock tile off of an old shower wall when we were doing a demo. I just keep it in there when I'm not using it in case I ever got stuck and needed to bust down the door.

Here in Louisiana, south of I-10, our best storm protection is a boat on the side of the house.

I don't know what's the best but ease of getting into shouldn't be priority number 1 when it comes to protecting family. Get what protects you most IMO.

I think there are codes for these in places that need them.
