My uncle gave me the shotgun without a plug. So I went buy a plug (Remington brand) and inserted it into the magazine. However, I cannot fit two 3-1/2" shells with the plug in. Is it legal to trim the plug to fit the two 3-1/2" shells, as long as I cannot fit three 2-3/4" shells?

You should return the plug and buy the correct one...

im saying that you might of made a mistake and bought the incorrect plug. Can you double check the packaging?

Edit::: size plug, obviously not the brand.

Too late to check the package. Would it be legal to trim it to the necessary length? The plug itself says 870 on it.

Doesn't matter what you have in there as a plug. I've seen guys put sticks in there walking from the dove field back to the truck (and the awaiting Green Jeans).

It doesn't matter if you trim it. You can have a homemade plug in there as long as 3 shells don't fit in there.

I had one ,I made out of necessity one day, for years in my 870. I was check a few times after that and all was fine.

Not sure of the "letter" of the law on parts like that...

By law, the shotgun should be able to carry 3 shells (one in the chamber and 2 in the magazine). Unless things have changed, the plug should be a simple plastic "stick" that prevents the spring from compressing far enough to load more than 2 in the magazine. I've seen some guys who simply cut a wodden dowel to used as a plug. The warden isn't going to check to see if it is modified as long as it prevents loading more that 3 shells total into the gun AND it isn't really easy to remove.

Thanks. I just want to make sure I'm legal. As long as three 2-3/4" shells do not fit, I'm good to go.

Yes. It is installed correctly. Even let someone else take it apart and look at it to make sure.

Yep. As long as 3 don't fit, you're golden.

Thanks for the help, guys. I knew the outdoor board would come through with an answer.

It's legal to stick whatever you want in there as a plug as long as no more than 2 shells can fit in the magazine.

We had to cut a piece of a fishing pole once and stick in a gun.

Directly from La hunting regulations:

"Shotguns larger than a 10 gauge or capable
of holding more than three shells are prohibited.
Plugs used in shotguns must be
incapable of being removed without disassembly"

I would love to get a legal interpretation of "disassembly". Reason I ask is that the last 3 shotguns I bought (last was in late 90's), when purchased they were assembled such that once you took the cap off the magazine, the plug could be removed. That was pretty damn convenient! I took one in to a shop a few years back for some work and when I got it back, they had placed the plug "under" the retainer inside the magazine. The retainer is held in very tightly and requires a lot more effort to remove than simply the cap. I wonder if that latter is actually required by regulation.

I've been checked several times with my plug under the tube cap. Never got questioned about it.

My BPS10 is the same way. All you have to do is take the cap off and the plug comes right out. I'm pretty sure that taking the cap off constitutes disassembly.
