Will be flying to Montana next week for a mule deer hunt. What's the ob opinion on getting horns/cape back to Louisiana? Assuming we kill, the outfitter says we can donate the meat in a nearby town so will only be trying to bring back something to mount. I've been told freight to have it shipped back is several hundred dollars and have also been told you can flash freeze the cape and pack it and the horns in a large box and just check it in as luggage. Not sure what to do?

My father recently went Elk hunting in Oregon and killed a nice 6x6 and was able to fly back with the horns. He had to have all the points wrapped up and it had to be under a certain weight (can't recall the exact weight). You should be fine checking in the cape as normal luggage if it's in an ice chest or box. Call your airline and they will be able to give you all the details, but it's definitely doable and a lot cheaper than shipping.

Thanks.
So he just checked the horns in wrapped up but didn't have to be in a box themselves? Just the cape ?

I've carried on whitetail antlers. Got some strange looks, but they aren't on the Prohibited Items List, so ball out.

(hopefully you kill something that doesn't fit underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin.)

Correct. It would've taken a pretty large box to fit those suckers in.

Good luck on the hunt
