I have 2 backstraps from a deer killed on Sunday sitting in gallon freezer bags. The reason for the ziplocks is to not get blood all over the other stuff in my ice chest. How long will they keep for stored this way? Not directly on ice, but in ziplock submerged in ice.

I have left my deer on ice for 7 days drawing the blood out. Thats as long as i'll leave it though.

Its perfectly fine

You did well not putting the meat directly in the ice water.

Really? I've always heard to put it directly into the ice, that's mainly why I asked.

I used to do that because everyone at the camp did it. But learmed to treat it like actual beef.

You would never take a ribeye or filet mignon and stick it in ice water to get the blood out right?

No I wouldnt but we dont have freezers at the camp and being 2.5-3 hours away from home I go for the week. If I had a walk in freezer I would hang it in there for a few days. Ice chest is fine.

I bring my deer to get it vacuum sealed and it lasts for years that way.

Put in trash bag in the ice just to keep cold in that case

empty the "blood" out of the zip locks as it accumulates.

I like to age mine for at least 10-14 days in the meat drawer in my fridge before i cook them. as long as there is ice they will be fine

I've let mine age for 8-9 days in the meat drawer before, but the outside got hard and brown. I just cut it off before cooking. Was trimming off the hardened part necessary or was I just being a poon? Any aging tips are quite welcome. I also don't have a walk-in freezer.

texas a and m did study in 60s?- hang deer with all legs down for one week in cooler at @ 34 degrees for best results - had opportunity to try- also put butchered pieces of other deer same time in ice slush for week emptying every day or so - cooked two pieces - exactly the same

It is spoiled and now highly toxic, you need a professional like myself to dispose of them. Give me your address and I'll be right over and being the nice guy I am I won't charge you a dime.
