Does anyone know of a quail hunt in N La? A friend has an 86 yo dad that I'd like to take one last time. I'm afraid the drive from Shreveport to Walthall county Ms may be a little too much for him. TIA

If you change your mind and want to go to Thornhill’s. Wayne would make it a great one, I feel he would cater to an older gentleman well, I have a place about 3 miles from Thornhill and y’all would be welcome to stop eat, rest, even spend the night if you would like

Thank you, Wayne Thornhill is my first choice if he can make the trip. Wayne is the best.

There is also a place in Bastrop La called Bayou Bird Hunts and quail is all they do. Apologize for the FB link but that is all I could find on them.

god I miss the quail of my youth.

The downfall of duck hunting doesn't bother me nearly as much as the vanishing of quail. Made a hunt last week at a place in the early 80s we would have pushed up 3-5 coveys every hunt. By 1988 it was 1-2. Now NONE. with very good experienced dogs.

Can’t find what doesn’t exist.

There are still birds around in some places in LA.

I don't think there are many quail left in East Texas. I used to hear them around Lake Fork many years ago. And my long deceased uncle said there were quail around Tyler mid 20th century. But there aren't many any more. In fact an article from the Dallas Morning News 2021 said they are essentially gone. Natural grasses have evolved into coastal Bermuda.

Pretty sure he is looking for a pen raised quail shoot, all the places listed above are pen raised shoots which I truly enjoy

Kind of like the "wild" pheasant hunt I went on. There were way too many cock pheasant in the field relative to the hens for me to believe they were just wild. It was South Dakota.

Well shame on anyone for selling a pen raised bird shoot as a wild bird hunt, everyone I have been on, it is very obvious and straightforward what was going on

I believe the SD has some requirement on outfitters to release some amount of pheasants based on the number of birds they harvest. I don’t know the exact language of the law so I could be wrong, but many outfitters in SD do supplement wild birds with pen raised birds. I’m not a pheasant guy so I haven’t gone to SD other than to hunt grouse.

I will say this about pheasants, pen raised pheasants can act considerably more wild than pen raised quail. People that would know have told me that after pre release pheasants have been on the landscape for awhile, they are no easy target. I’m talking about birds that have been on the ground for a few weeks or longer, the ones that don’t get immediately nuked by predators. Not to say they are as difficult to hunt as wild birds by any stretch.

Early-release pheasants have a much better survival rate than release quail. A pheasant in the wild for a couple of weeks will be a strong flier and a decent chance at surviving. They have to release quail the morning of a hunt because regardless if you shoot them or not most will be dead by the following day.
