PSA for spearfisherman/scuba guys(updated)

Some good info to help some of you so you don't wind up like me down the road.
Am about to undergo my second total shoulder replacement at age 54. Played every sport there was pretty much from 9 yrs of age through college and after. Played years of softball and 10 yrs after that of competitive archery.
So what does this have to do with diving/spearfishing?
I have severe osteoarthritis. Still in damn good shape but my joints are giving out on me due to cartlage breaking down/wearing out, thinning...you name it.
About to go through my 8th joint focused surgery in the last 11 yrs.
After what could have caused this severe breakdown I have finally figured out what started the ball rolling, so to speak.
When I was working in Saudi I logged roughly 250 dives in the Red Sea. 95% of these were spearfishing dives where the majority of time was spent between 80-130 ft of depth. No issues there.
But for one spot, a mound that sat off by itself, we had to do US Navy table dives since the mound was in @ 300 ft of water with the top at 150 ft.
On one dive, like a DA, I pushed the max time at 150 and was at depth probably 4 minutes too long going after a 40 lb grouper. Despite doing all the called for safety stops (80 ft, 60,40,20 and 15) I knew I was in trouble when I hit 15 ft and my shoulders started to ache. Excruciating by the time we got back to the beach (shore dive) I quickly took 4 aspirin, hydrated massively and put in some much needed prayer. Eventually the aches subsided within an hour or so, so there was no need to go downtown to the de-compression chamber. All was well, or so I thought.
In retrospect that onset of a mild case of the "bends" set my joints on a path to self-destruction. The costs of the surgeries and the pain I live with on a daily basis eclipse the awesomeness that swimming aroung thumping grouper and snapper provided me at the time. So please heed my warning and keep the dives to the tables/charts and don't push the limits to get that one last/big fish.
Please don't... it ain't worth it... take it from someone who knows all too well.

Wow, are they doing traditional or reverse?

I hate that anyone has to go through this, just because of a mistake. Prayers

That's tough to hear. I've heard bends are painful and dangerous but had no idea they effects could be long-lasting.

Apparently, it's called Dysbaric osteonecrosis.
I never would have thought decompression sickness could lead to permanent joint damage, thanks for sharing.

Traditional
Mistake of youth. Back then thought I was indestructible. In great shape, could swim miles under the ocean, considered myself an apex predator underwater.
Unfortunately I wasn't a fish. LOL
I think the key to the situation I found myself in wasn't the time itself at depth but a result of that in combination with one more diving no-no.
On the way back from work my diving buddy/instructor had changed his mind and said he wouldn't be able to do an afternoon dive because something had come up.
With the dive "off" I decided to do a quick workout at the gym on "base". Wasn't a 2 Hr killer but put in some reps on various body parts. I get back to my villa and the phone rings. My bud had changed his mind and said the dive was back on. Not wanting to miss a crack at a big boy grouper/tuna/etc I neglected to tell him I had just come from the gym. If I had he would assuredly told me I wasn't diving. So nobodies fault but my own.
Oh the sins of youth and pride....

Sorry for what you're going thru, but genetics play a huge part.

No joint issues whatsoever on either side of the family FWIW

For comparison
A normal humerus ball
[/img]
My ball that was removed from my right shoulder showing the bone spur growth and loose bodies formed from destroyed cartlage. These usually move around between the ball and socket in the shoulder doing further damage

Damn, that's young to go through that. I've heard those replacement shoulders don't last too long.

Sorry to hear about that timbo. Best luck and prayers for your surgery.

Man that thing looks completely trashed

Gnarly. Can't say I've ever been in an OR where they place the specimens on paper towels. Did your surgeon let you take the specimens?
Posted on 6/11/17 at 3:54 am to gumbodawg
Yeah. I had to sign paperwork and was able to pick it up a week later after they ran the normal cancer screening and other tests on it.

So many subtle brags in the OP.

I wouldn't call it bragging.
More like trying to help some of the younger guys not make the same mistake I made.
Where I'm from we call it the voice of experience.

Great PSA
There is a very notable local diver that has had to have a hip replacement due to similar things... except make that 150 a 225+ multiple times
