Protecting recently planted trees from the winter cold

Planted 3 crepe myrtles and 2 queen palms early this past summer. I'm guessing the crepe myrtles are more naturally resistant to cold, so I'm more concerned about losing the palms. So far I've got a few bales of pine straw to pack around their bases. Any other tips?

The palms should be good to the low 20's, but I have used Christmas lights in the past around the tree and then wrapped in a blanket and the truck stayed very warm...

Queens don't winter real good. I had to cut a few down after last winter that had a light on them on the worst nights. Cover and use a high watt light on the worst nights. Beware of the long stretches below freezing too, not just the lowest temps. And take that cover off during the day if it will warm up any at all, especially if it's plastic. A lot of people do more harm than good covering them when they don't need it and leaving it on during the day when the sun is out. This can burn them, or course with a palm you can cut the entire top off without killing the palm, like you would other plants, to remove the burned leaves.

Thats a good idea. I'm assuming the larger bulb christmas lights?

I used plastic one time and it almost killed the tree. And yes, I did remove it at daylight. Better to use a old bed sheet or blanket.

I don't know anything about palms, but you wont have to worry about the myrtles

No the mini lights, the real common ones, just not LED.

Thanks for the responses. Any ideas where to get thick, cheap blankets? Goodwill maybe?
