There is no scope on them. Most of them have rails for the rings.

Snake,
For deer hunting at ranges appropriate for the 444 Marlin or 45/70, the deer will not know the difference. (Neither will your shoulder....It'll still hurt!) Using factory loads, 45/70 will push a 350 gr bullet to 1800 fps. The 444 will push a 240 gr bullet to 2400 fps. The factory 45/70 loads run at reduced pressure in deference to older 45/70 guns out there that might kaboom w/ higher pressure loads. Consequently, if loading for a modern constuction gun (like the Handi-Rifle), a careful handloader can greatly improve the 45/70, making it more versatile than the 444. If you don't handload, I'd get whichever round you can most easily get factory loaded ammo for.

I was just curious. I think for $250 you can buy a new one with no scope.

Last year I bought the H&R 44 Mag and have been very pleased. I shot a doe at 140 yards with it last year in the lungs and it passed all the way through. I mainly bought such a low powered gun so my little boy can shoot it, but I'll keep hunting primitive arms season with it until he gets old enough to shoot.

For whitetails....for a 'primitive' season gun, there doesn't seem to be much difference. I have the .444. Academy carries the Hornady ammo. I also ordered the Survivor pistol-grip stock and fore end piece from H&R. Completely transformed the gun! Enjoy.

I basically did the same thing. I took the cheap scope off my muzzleloader and put it on my .45-70. Hard to justify spending $$$ for a quality scope for a rifle I only hunt with twice a year.

I seized the opportunity to upgrade my 30-06.

I agree. The increased versatility of a handloaded 45/70 over a factory loaded 444 would mainly be a factor for game other than whitetail deer.
