I've got a scope laying around that needs a home on a rifle. What's y'all opinion on the best all around primitive cartridge? I feel like it's the .35 whelen but I don't know much more than what I've read. If it is the .35, what are the top brands to look at? No real budget as I don't think it'll come into play on a rifle like this.

What y'all think?

.35 is the way to go. CVA makes a couple of really good ones. As far as ammo goes, use Barnes.

I have a .444 & my son has a .35 Remington. Ammo can be hard to find for the .35 Remington though.

Im still using my 50cal muzzle loader-TC Omega. Rifle accurate with some 250gr shockwaves and 150gr pellets. Been lucky so far and never missed an animal with it yet, all shot at 70-120yds.

Im hoping they dont quit making components for muzzle loaders because then I would be forced to buy a gun I hardly ever shoot.

I would go 35 Whelen.

There are states in the Midwest that are muzzleloader and shotgun only for deer hunting.

.35 Whelen is a 30-06 case with a 9mm bullet instead of a 7.62mm bullet. Hilarious to me that it's considered "primitive" because it's quite capable, but since they allow it, that's my recommendation as well.

Have one and killed plenty with it, including my first rack buck.
275 grain....... BOOM!
Takes about 4 shots before the shoulder starts saying ..... DAMN GINA!

ive had the 45-70, the 35 whelen... but i recently decided to go with something different. Got an h&r 20ga slug gun. This will be my primitive rifle this season. Close to same ballistics as a 30-30, and where i hunt, my longest shots will be no longer than 50-75 yards. Just think the ole slugster will be more fun than these new primitive rifles.

I finally jumped ship from my CVA Kodiak this past year and bought a CVA Scout 2 in 35 whelen (synthetic and stainless) shooting Hornady 200gr SP. I like the gun and it is very accurate once dialed in. Also it does kick like a mule.

Good to know. My best hunt was when a big sow and 4 little ones came out running straight for me. I dropped the mom at 100-120yds, Babies just kept coming back. I was stacking pigs like legos with the smoke pole. Shooting once every 30 seconds, I made 4 shots. So much smoke in front of me, I could barely see. I was only able to get 3. The last shot was shooting at them in the brush and they never came back.

35 Whelen has made the others look silly. Double the effective range, 1000fps faster, 1000 more ft/lbs energy

I have heard some bad things about the CVAs quality, anyone experienced any issues?
