I've got my soil samples back and it looks like I will be needing about 5-6 tons of lime for food plots. Does anyone have an idea of about how much it costs per ton? Which type to go with? Any other suggestions.

Don't know the cost, but you can buy it in bulk from many feed stores. Some will provide a hopper on wheels you can pull with your truck.

It's relatively cheap. Like $5-6/100lbs

I prices it the other day. Ag line is $60/ton. One co-op charged $25 to rent their cart which I think is 4 or 5 tons. An 8 ton truck from one co-op was part of the $60

I think your soil test will reveal which one to go with. If your magnesium level is low you'll go with dolomitic but more than likely you'll probably go with ag lime. Go to a feed & seed/chemical sales co in your area & hand them your soil test & tell them how many acres you need. I rode with the guy in the spreader truck and guided him around. Best decision I ever made. That would have been an all weekend event.

Do we need to disc the ground first or just spread it out?

I've done it both ways bc I didn't have time to disc beforehand. You may want to ask an extension agent if it affects how well lime incorporates into the soil. I wouldn't bottom plow the lime into the soil.

The county agent I talked to about my samples said to put out the ag lime around the first of August. Do not disk before you put it out. Plant in October and that will mix it all in. He said don't bother with pelletized lime because it doesn't last. It's almost instant pH increase but it's temporary. Crushed ag lime will take some time to increase the pH but it will last a lot longer.

Exactly. We usually spread AG lime and let nature do the rest to get it in. Any remaining will get disked in
