Preferred shotgun slug?

I'm stuck in slug gun country (eastern VA). Using a Mossy 500 slugster. Got it for Christmas and at the time the only local ammo I could find was Hornady TSX slugs. I got them to group "good enough," but not as good as i would like. Anyone have suggestions for other brands? I've heard not to use rifled slugs in a rifled barrel, but not sure how true that is.
Also, I gotta get a dang recoil pad. This thing thumps.

Lightfield makes some really cool stuff.
They shoot well and kill on both ends.

go with a limbsaver recoil pad and just keep experimenting with slugs till you find one that your gun likes, they can be quite picky and 2 identical guns can favor different ammunition

Not sure what your maximum distance is. Brenneke slugs will max out around 100 yards ish. Every gun likes different ammo. You'll just have to tinker with different slugs til you find one that shoots. I guess a starting point would be to match the barrel twist to the weight of the slug. Generally slower twist barrels shoot shorter or lighter weight projectiles better. Like muzzleloaders 1-72 twist is good for shooting round balls, not for sabots.

Remington Premier Accu-tip

Thanks guys. Any input on a rifled slug in a rifled barrel?

I'm shooting a 20GA H&R handi-rifle with a rifled barrel and the 3" Remington accu-tips. This was at 100 yards this past season before a gun hunt in Illinois:
The ballistics say it drops 3" between 100 and 150, then the bottom falls out past 150. I was dialed in and killed two deer with this setup in 2015. The Hornady SST slug did not shoot well at all out of my gun. The accu-tip was the only round I found that kept a pattern. Another tip is to clean your barrel after every other shot. I found this to be critical in keeping a grouping.

The Remington premier accu-tips are great out of my Savage. Savage actually recommends them in the owners manual. The expensive truth is, for best results you're going to have to feed that slugster different brands of ammo until you find something it likes and you're confident with in the woods. Best of luck.
Side note: Lead Sled will help that awful thump on that shoulder at the range. Adrenaline should take care of it in the woods.

Damn good shootin. How do you like that H&R? I went to look for one but Gander didn't have any. Ended up with the Savage model 220.

H&R isn't making them right now. Got bought out by Savage.
Price is much less of a concern than my shoulder I was actually looking at sleds at Bass Pro earlier.

The sled is for sure a solid investment.

I thought freedom bought h&r? Same group that owns bushmaster and Remington?

Possible. Either way they're not making the slug guns right now from what I was told.

Makes sense. I couldn't find a new one anywhere.

Me neither. That's what I really wanted before I got the 500.

How do you like that H&R?
I've got the same gun in 45-70 and really like both of them. I only bought the 20GA one because I was invited to go on a gun hunt in Illinois last year and you can only use slug or muzzleloader. I wasn't buying a new muzzleloader for the trip and decided on a slug gun. After calling damn near every gun store in the state, one was on the shelf at Simmons in Bastrop, LA. I called my dad and he bought it an hour later, as I live four hours away.
I then purchased the gun from him after a full background check and starting to dial it in. I went 2/2 on shots to kills last season and can't wait to get back up there with it this November. The slugs are a bit expensive at $3 a round, but well worth it to experience a Midwest whitetail hunt during the rut.
