I think I have an armadillo or a few of them going through my garden. Everyday I'm finding new, neat, small holes dug in my mulch. It seems to be a hole made by a snout or very small paws. I'm guessing it's an armadillo looking for worms...any opinions?

If it is what I suspect, what can I do to make them stop. The only thing I've done is put lights on at night but that hasn't stopped the animal.

Thanks baws!

Squirrels.

Shoot or trap and drown.

An armadillo is going to dig a larger hole.

Ok, I do have a ton of squirrels around the yard.

I have not seen an armadillo with my own eyes, only a dead one in the street and just figured.

Armadillo's root around making small holes at night looking for food. They usually dig one large hole for a den.

Go out at night with a flashlight and a Judge.

ETA: you said garden... Is it a vegetable garden or flower bed? My dad has a fairly large vegetable garden and sets out live traps. He's caught coons, armadillos, opossums, cats, foxes, squirrels, egrets...

An armadillo will dig multiple small holes when searching for food. They will absolutely tear up a yard with quarter to silver dollar sized holes. If you see a hole about the diameter of their body then you have a bigger issue because they burrowing. But what you are seeing is them digging for food. Be glad they in your garden and not yard but it's probably just a matter of time. You can try mothballs in the garden but I can tell you from experience that it doesn't help. The only method that works for me is trap and remove or trap, kill and remove. Whichever you prefer.

For armadillos, sprinkle cayenne pepper around your garden. Not sure why it works, just know that it does.

My dad was trapping dozens of armadillos a year and was told to try using cayenne pepper around his yard. No armadillos since.

Yes they're half dollar size holes and are about a dozen at a time after I recover them with the mulch (flower beds). I don't have any problems in my small vegetable/fruit area.

I haven't found any dens, but my yard backs up to a wooded area and they're probably in there.

I'm going to buy some pepper today and see what occurrs.

And shooting them isn't a option due to the neighborhood.

Most probably squirrels. They're constantly digging in our front flower beds

But it happens over night. Are squirrels nocturnal?

It's tough to tell judging from the pics you may or may not have posted

armadillos have been tearing the frick out of our yard lately as well. Lake on the front side, wooded area on the back so I know where they are coming from I just haven't been drunk enough to stay up all night and wage war with them yet.

The way I usually catch Armadillo is to create a funnel to the entrance of a live trap. Apparently they don't see very well. I've use a long 2x6 and the side of my house, traps at 2 corners.

So sorry. I saw them again at 3am today on my way to work and made the post at work. I'll get right on the pics when I get home in an hour.

Electric fence works well for armadillos. You can get a charger and wire setup for $50. As someone also said, it could be squirrels too.
