Would trolling be a good way to go after specks?

If so, what trolling setup would I need?

What else might hit while trolling?

I’ve fished a good bit in Apalachicola and that general area and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone trolling. It’s mostly bottom fishing around oyster bars, grass flats, structure, etc.

That guide might have been a good idea.

Probably get some mackerel and jacks. Usually makes for fun day on the boat

My cousin trolls that area with a spoon and kills em.

When are you going?

I'll be in that area the week of the 21st. I generally surf fish or charter when we go on a beach trip. We aren't chartering this trip, however. So I will be surf fishing.

Hope y'all have a great trip.

We’re heading down on May 27.
Have a boat rented for 7 days.

We’ll probably sight cast for triple tails early in the mornings and cast for specks afterwards.

I was just thinking we might troll up something for the kids to enjoy catching.

That’s what I was thinking.
Our kids would enjoy catching those, and we wouldn’t be constantly untangling lines which is what would happen if they’re casting.

Nice, enjoy yourself. I know in the Apalachicola Bay area near St George Island you can fish Buoys and catch tripletail. Also Sikes cut is usually good fishing when the tide is moving. All sorts of fish there.

But this is my first trip to Port St. Joe. So I have no real clue.

Indian Pass Raw Bar is a must. One of the best dives on the Gulf.

I’ll be there on 27th as well with my own boat. I’ve been fishing that area for a long time now and can help you out.

Already on the list

We frequently go to St George Island. We used to love Eddy Teach but they never recovered from one of the hurricanes. Subsequently, we started going to Paddy's Raw Bar and that place is also pretty awesome.

St joe Bay is clear. Crystal clear.

Do not troll, use the wind and the current and drift the flats. Especially around black island.

Z man paddle tail. 25 inch trout all over that bay.

Trolling spoons pretty fast is deadly on Spanish and they are the perfect fish for kids to catch...fight good and eat excellent...and usually a bunch of them if they're any at all.

Ought to be some kings in the pass. Flat lining dead baits on an outgoing tide can be deadly on kingfish at times. Late May may be a little early though...

High Five Dive Bar in Apalachicola is a good time on weekends if you get over that way.

If you plan to fish any in St Joe Bay, I’d use a cast net and fish with pinfish and croakers on the grass/sand edges in 4-6 feet of depth. We do really well bouncing around different spots with that technique in the back half of the bay near Black’s Island and Pig Island.
