Pool motor problem....

So, about a week ago my pool suddenly lost a large amount of water. Reason is not important, but the issue is resolved. But, when I initially found the pool had lost the water, the pool pump was not running. When I walked over to it, the pump motor came on for about 5 seconds and then went off. It repeated this, off for about a minute and then a 5 second back on. There was no water in the skimmer or housing and it probably "ran dry" overnight. No smell of burnt motor.
I re-filled the pool, water in skimmer and housing. But the motor still does the same...will come on (I can see the motor spinning), but then click off.
Besides massive ignorance, whats the problem here? Thanks in advance!

1) For safety reasons many pool pumps are designed to shut off if they begin to overheat. The pump uses thermal overload switches so if your pump keeps shutting off it could be because these switches are going bad.
2) Another top reason a pool pump keeps shutting off is if it has incorrect voltages. The pump runs off of a motor that requires electricity! If you have a new pump or pool, your pump might be wired incorrectly or loosely!
In the case your pump turns off a few seconds after turning it on you might even have a bad capacitor. Capacitors regulate the amount of power the pump gets and can go bad with age. We can check just to know for sure!

my guess is you burnt the seal and now the motor has a bind and is overheating.

Have you tried re priming the pump basket with water?
Many of them can't self prime and will shut off after a few moments to prevent cavitation and damage
I'd fill the pump basket with water and try to restart

This. My pump had the same symptoms (although wasn't dry) and it was the capacitor. Got a new one at the local appliance repair store for a few bucks and had it running in no time. Watch a quick youtube on how to change them if you never have.
And OP, I know you said its not important, but how'd your pool get so low?

We had foam injected under the deck to stop it from sinking and raise it a bit. Well, the foam followed a crack and poked a hole in liner. I didn’t notice this . Leaked out via hole.
