Pond Management - Blue Herron

We have a 1 acre fishing pond in our neighborhood. About a month ago, two Blue Herron’s showed up. Several times a day I see them feeding in the pond. Should I get rid of them? Are two of them capable of depleting the bait fish population?
*Of course I meant to say “Relocate them”.

Probably helping you out by eating the small bream that tend to overpopulate a pond

I can’t keep them out of my pond either. Several cranes/egret and a massive heron are here almost daily.
Hard to relocate a bird that knows where food is….

Pond consultant told me not to worry about herons and egrets. Just try to keep cormorants out and keep an eye out for otters. This is a 12 acre lake and is 12’ deep in locations.

I doubt herons are gonna empty out a pond. Like someone else said, if eating small bream that’s a good thing. If worried about minnows look up a fish farm and go buy some minnows a couple times a year to put in there. Fathead minnows preferably, 1 acre pond, each time just stock 4-5lbs worth. If there is cover in the pond they’ll be fine. If not, maybe add a few more pounds. They are relatively cheap to buy

I mean, unless you want to get a permit or risk a hefty fine, I'd just let them eat the small fish and enjoy the additional wildlife around the pond.
Like someone else said, cormorants and otters are what you really need to watch out for...and even those are more trouble to get rid of than any damage they can do.

If turkeys are too high for Thanksgiving, just serve your guests Blue Herron. Kill two birds with one stone (pun intended).

Mine eats big bream too. You wouldn't think they could get it down their skinny neck but they can.

Not really worried about the little bream, we don’t fish it as much as we should….. but
He had a 16 inch bass in his mouth a while back….. I saw it while driving around, stopped truck and ran after him. He dropped it, but it was too late for the fish. Pissed me off ??.

If that is the case...
... first you make a roux.

you need to find another "expert" i have seen egrets with 14 inch catfish and many pond people will tell you that several egrets will clean out a small pond they also stab bigger fish they cant eat and let them die - all from experience

Again, what are you going to do about it other than try to scare them off?
I mean, sure, you can shoot them, but you better never piss anyone off that knows about it, or your arse is getting turned into USFWS for a federal crime.

I have nothing to add except it is spelled “heron”.

Blast them
Pepper them from about 80-90 yards from behind. A few times and they will probably move on.

This is why Louisiana deserves the reputation it gets.
You're worried about a bird eating too much out of your neighborhood pond?!?
I've seen on eat a whole catfish out of my pond. Good for them. Why would I want to kill it?

The answer is no (I’m speaking as inland fisheries biologist).
