From CCA Louisiana:

This Thursday, October 5, the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission will consider modifications to menhaden harvest regulations.

CCA Louisiana is urging a 1 mile coast-wide buffer.

Concerned citizens are encouraged to attend and/or send emails to the commission.

If you can't go, consider sending an email at comments@wlf.la.gov . Here's are some basic details if you want to include them in your email:

According to the pogie boat industry's own numbers, they support about 800 jobs and bring about $500 million in revenues.

But, according to this link, recreational fishing adds almost 2 billion to the economy and supports 17,000 jobs. That's four times as much as the pogie industries rosey numbers, and 21 times as many jobs.

quote:

Louisiana’s seafood industry generates $1.92 billion in total sales annually and supports about 33,391 jobs. Recreational fishing adds another $1.96 billion in sales and supports nearly 17,000 jobs in the state. In addition to sustaining a large part of the economy, the Mississippi River Delta’s fisheries also support a unique way of life for generations of Louisianans.

And according to this link it's about the same.

1 mile is better than bank fishing they are doing now. Who's going to enforce it?

I plan on attending the meeting. I’ve also heard Jeff Landry doesn’t support the change

Good question. Hopefully LDWF will enforce it as enthusiastically as they enforce me have a charge in my fire extinguisher or the 1/4 inch short black drum in my box.

But if I had to guess, prob not.

I can't make the meeting, but sent an email:

Good morning Wildlife and Fisheries,

I am writing to urge the commission to consider modifying current menhaden harvest regulations at the Oct 5th meeting. I agree with CCA in that a 1 mile buffer zone needs to be enacted in order to protect our fisheries. I am sure you've seen the recent massive fish kill in the southwestern part of our state. Pushing them further offshore would improve the food supply for Redfish and Speckled Trout, as well as other species.

According to the pogie boat industry's own numbers, they support about 800 jobs and bring about $500 million in revenues. Recreational fishing adds almost 2 billion to the economy and supports 17,000 jobs. That's four times as much as the pogie industries' rosey numbers, and 21 times as many jobs.

Thank you for your time,

of course they are, they work for the commercial fishermen to restrict recreational fishing as much as possible.

it should be a 10 mile limit with a requirement LWLF uses half its budget to strictly enforce the limits. but CCA could never support anything that helps recreational fishing, that is not what they want to do

As we saw recently in Southwest Louisiana with sport fish bycatch, the Pogie boats are doing irreparable damage to our sport fish population. Bycatch of sport fish is one of the problems with allowing the pogie boats so close to shore. Pogie are a large source of forage for our sport fish and removing that forage is also harming our sport fish numbers. Lower limits of sport fish are now proposed when we could eliminate the harm done from Pogie boats and possibly not affect the recreational fishing industry due to problems it has not created.

According to the pogie boat industry's own numbers, they support about 800 jobs and bring in about $500 million in revenues. Recreational fishing adds almost 2 billion to the economy and supports 17,000 jobs. That's four times as much as the pogie industries numbers, and 21 times as many jobs.

Please support at least a 1 mile buffer from our coast and a cap on annual catch rates. We are the last state in the nation that allows the pogie boats to operate so close to shore and without a cap on amount caught.

Emails are pointless imo, call and give hensgens office an ear full since he has been the one killing this. He has been bought by the Pogie industry for some $$ and a Ruth’s steak. Get pissed at the legs that voted against you and let them know their days are numbered.

I've sent a few emails to my local Senators and Reps about Hensgens. Seems like, outside looking in, some pressure is starting to be applied.

Senator Jeremy Stine sent a letter to WLF to push them off 1 mile. Kudos to him.

ETA - saw article that Virginia, the only other coastal state with zero restrictions is also trying to push them offshore.

I got an auto reply:

Your correspondence has been received by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

The information you have provided will be sent to all appointed Commissioners prior to the meeting and made part of the official meeting minutes as public comment to the corresponding agenda item.

LDWF thanks you for participating in the rulemaking process. Your insight is valuable and appreciated.

Not that anybody is gonna actually read of emails but at least if enough people are sending them they are getting the point and having to add it to the official minutes.

Yes - but the Virginia catch is only 25% of the total catch for the US. 75% of the entire US catch comes from with 5 miles of the Louisiana Coast...with zero regulations. Unfortunately these guys are very well funded and send a pile of money to our politicians.

Hensgens has received at least $6,000 in campaign donations from Omega Protein, a Menhaden company.

Edit to add: Omega has contributed nearly $150,000 to various politicians since electronic disclosure became the rule. There are a few that have gotten more than Hensgens, Tanner Magee is at $7,500, Jonathan Perry was at $7,500, and our buddy John Bell is at $5,000

That sounds really really low.

I'm sure much more was donated through others names. Political donations have a cap for contributions.

I agree, but that's what is in the official electronic file.

He gets countless donations from nursing homes, health care, and related organizations.

Point is, the Pogie industry is very active in politics, and Hensgens is just one of their bought politicians.

Omega is just one organization, and they have donated at least $150K in mostly $500 to $2,500 installments, need to figure out the other players.
