Going to be fishing marsh around big lake tomorrow. I demo'd, decided, and this will be my first trip out. I need some help with essentials so that I do not have any "oh shite, I forgot about that" moments on the water.

I have a small floating net and stringer
Compact tackle bag with what I will need
Dry box

Thinking I will need:
Anchor
Anchor trolley
Crate or box?
Hog trough or some type of measuring tool
Rod leashes
Paddle leash
Flag/light
Safety kit

And other absolute must have for first trip? Trying to keep it minimal until I know how this will go.

seems like you've got just about everything except your rods.
I think rods are an absolute must have

Keep it pretty minimal your first few trips out and you'll quickly figure out what you need/don't need. If you're going to be fishing alot of shallow marsh then I'd suggest making a PVC stake out pole. I carry an anchor but it rarely gets used unless I'm in ~5ft+ depths.

Yes, first time. Kayaked a few times. Experienced in normal boats.

Thought about including rods, but figured I needed to leave something out to get harassed about, haha.

Go minimal for sure. All I bring every time I fish out of the yak is fly rod, paddle, park and pole, small ice chest, and then a box of flies.

Well good luck to you. It's very addicting.

Don't forget an ice chest for water, beer, etc.

You might find that you'll want a fish bag/ice chest to keep the fish in. Dragging a stringer full of reds and trout around all day isn't very fun.

Other things to consider:
- net
- fish grip
- stick anchor: I use a broom stick with a PVC T-connector duct taped to the top; I'm rarely in water deep enough to need a mushroom anchor

Like someone else said, it will take you a few times out to figure out what you need and where you want to store it.

Where do you plan on fishing in BL? For you first time out I'd perhaps look for areas with low boat traffic.

I was actually going to fish the marsh west of spicers for reds this time to get my feet under me before going for bigger water. Any suggestions?

Niceee

Launch at Devall rd public launch and fish those coves. Low boat traffic but watch for oysters

Split image fail

Must have: go to Home Depot/Lowes and pick up a 8' tomato/garden stake. They also have shorter... get the 8 footer. It's green plastic coated tubing... ribbed for her pleasure. It's $4 and a great short term stake out pole. You can stick it through paddle holder bungee on side of yak. You will eventually want a trolley but you can't beat this setup for $4

I have a few buddies that have been doing well in that same area but I've never tagged along with them. I've fished West Cove a few times, and done well, that's another option that's near by. You can put in at the boat launch, take a right at the second canal and that leads to a ton of broken marsh area with alot of shallow flats.

Not sure if it will fit in your kayak, but I use a bag cooler. See below. It can hold a mess of fish.

You also might be able to stuff a cooler in the front hatch (no clue how deep or wide it is). I have one like this in the front hatch of my Native Redfish.
