Just bought my first kayak, based on many recommendations from this board I got the ascend fs12t. I plan on using it for fishing inshore/marsh and just casual boating in bay/river. What pfd do you guys recommend? Thanks

Stohlquist Fisherman

I doubles as my tackle box. Pliers, nail clippers, fish grip, measuring tape in one pocket. Lures, hooks, weights, etc. in the other.

El Cheapo from Academy. Too hot to wear a pfd for me.

I have just a cheap neoprene one from academy. I only wear it while traveling the boat channels to my fishing spots. 95% of my trips are in shallow marsh where boats can't/don't go so I don't need anything special.

I'd buy a shitty pfd until I get some experience on what I like and don't like.

I would get one that you feel comfortable wearing all of the time or else you won't use it. The self-inflating ones are great and you hardly notice they are there. Especially if you fish by yourself, fish when hypothermia is a concern or fish waters that can get rough, you need to wear your PFD.

If fishing then get one with lots of pockets.

I wear half my tackle box.

A/M inflatable for marsh and skinny water. Chinook for big water, bug traffic, and winter.

You can get A/M inflatable for $70-$80 on sale. Mine is Bass Pro brand.

Man I personally would hate doing this. I have all my tackle so specifically organized in my tackle box that this would drive me crazy. Granted I'm bass fishing, so maybe if you're sw fishing and really only throwing a few baits this would work.
