Climbing class was absolutey awesome. Learned a lot and got to practice a lot. Sunshine and windy for our rock climbing day. Finished the day with a 96 foot rappel.
Snowed most of the day at timberline which made it all seem more realistic. They made us slide a down a steep slope every which way having to self arrest ourselves. Practiced being on a rope team, and got familiarized with snow anchors. The snow is freaking strong when used properly. They built one anchor that could have held a car. There were ten of us yanking on the rope trying to make it give. Not a chance.
Unfortunately, my camera was dead so I'm STILL waiting on my friends to email me some
Exactly why I hate relying on others for pics.
Going to take a crevasse rescue class with the club this summer where we will spend a lot of time on anchors and practice rescuing someone out of the crevasse. Glacier travel as well.

Thank you. tLSU does better (see his Yellow-crowned Night Heron back a couple of pages ago and his flying pelicans further back) but it was my first real day with the camera/lens. I bought it because I'd kick myself if I didn't have a real camera in Alaska. T minus 2 weeks until we hit the road. Looking forward to shooting Bald Eagles, puffins, bear, moose, sheep, etc.
We are not going to make it to Juneau, the Alaska Marine Highway is pretty expensive to get there though we will probably take it Whittier-Valdez and Haines-Skagway where it is cost effective. The one open question is whether to drive the Dalton Highway up to Deadhorse. Have you ever driven it? Lots of anecdotal horror stories but there are also lots of posts on the internet that it really isn't that bad. Probably we will drive up to the Arctic Circle and then decide whether to make the push. Can't wait.

Haines is my favorite town in Alaska. Love that place. Lived in Skagway a couple summers ago. TOo bad you are missing Juneau though.

I have driven to Atigun Pass, and have flown up to Deadhorse and Prudhoe a couple of times. If you just drive to Coldfoot and return to Fairbanks, you have seen the best of it. No real reason to go to the slope.

Thanks for the input. We have been to Juneau but only for one day on a cruise. Went to the Mendenhall Glacier and did some hiking at the base. Pretty nice. I've heard the north slope is boring and there is not much reason to go to Deadhorse with the tight security and limited access (aside from gasoline and fixing tires). For us, though, there are a few reasons. Snowy Owls, Bluethroats, Eiders, and several other bird species that are hard to find anywhere else short of a flight to Barrow. The other wildlife is supposed to be pretty good (bears, caribou, musk ox) up there too but we probably will have seen a fair bit of wildlife by the time we hit the Dalton. We'll likely take it is stages and decide whether to proceed after each one: Yukon River, Arctic Circle, Coldfoot. Definitely a once in a lifetime trip and the Dalton Highway would be a cool thing to have on my final tally.

Great work there. 100-400mm is a fine lens, owned one for about 2 years.

It's a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 and the pictures were at 400 mm. After a fair bit of research on internet boards that lens is one of the most popular for wildlife photography without getting into the super expensive zone. I paired it with a Canon 60D.

Sheep Creek, low tide.
Where I am standing here is underwater at high tide. Nice fly fishing stream. Hard to believe, but cruise ships pass thru the channel in the background.

Was gonna hike to Herbert Glacier today, but the kids had different ideas. Took them to Sunshine Cove and let them loose.

Nice pictures as always.
I'm trying to decide whether to bring up some fishing gear. Is it worth bringing up a conventional spinning reel with a rod that is good for specs and reds? What lures/bait would I use? Or should I learn to fly fish while up there? I really know nothing about Alaska fishing though we'll probably do a trip in the Kenai that is 1/2 day Halibut and 1/2 day Salmon. Aside from that I'd like to wet a line at times but am a complete novice in that part of the world. Is there a good web site or book?

For fly fishing info, try this site here. It's pretty comprehensive and has a lot of info.
Are you going with a guide or charter? If so, no need to bring anything. Your fee usually includes equipment and conditional license. If you are bringing your own gear, what you use for specs or reds will do just fine.
