OT Landscapers Can I seed Centipede and Rye together
I just had my yard leveled so I have almost an entire dirt yard. After much research I have decided to go with Centipede over St. Aug because of the size of my yard. I would like to get some immediate grass down to keep the dog out of the mud. So my question is can I seed both centipede and winter rye at the same time or should I seed just rye and do centipede in the Spring. My concern was seeding Centipede with an existing Rye lawn could make it harder for the seeds to reach a decent depth to take root.

Centipede doesn't grow that well from a seed

Centipede should never be overseeded with another Grass. It can kill it.

If that's the case i'm fine with doing just Rye now and Centipede in the Spring. Will the Centipede germinate if there is living rye grass still in place at the time of seeding?

When you order centipede sod in the wintertime they typically overseed it with rye grass so there is something to root in until spring.

So, I would think this wouldn't be an issue.

The germination rate for centipede is very low compared to rye grass though.

Don't waste your money on centipede seed this early in the year.

Your seeds will most likely disappear before they're warm enough to germinate.

Rye if you just have to have some green right now.

Centipede sod now, or later. Whenever you have the money. Now is easier.

I've always heard not to plant rye on top of centipede, that it can kill your sod. No first hand experience though so take that for what it's worth.

Well, there is an issue that I've heard of...

If you do overseed your centipede with rye, be sure to keep the rye mowed when the centipede starts to wake up (usually in March).

The rye will steal the water and soil nutrients from the centipede. Much worse, if the rye has a big long leaf to "suck up/store/steal" from the centipede.

In short, rye is not a really a healthy situation for centipede, but if there is a need, it can be done.
