On a whim, signed up for a lottery hunt for Oryx in New Mexico. I hit.

Looking for general advice, particularly on stalking, packing out a 400+ pound animal. I've hunted whitetail a good bit, but have always been able to get deer onto an ATV or trailer and hang it up at the camp to clean it. I've goofed off some and walk hunted, but mostly have hunted out of stand/box.

I plan on hunting with my Remington 700. Chambered in .30-'06. I've been using 150-grain Winchester Super X, but it's done well with 168-grain Winchester Silver Tip in the past.

Had no clue they had free range oryx in NM. I'd imagine having a good pair of binos would help. Good luck.

Did you draw on the White Sands Missile Range or off range?
There are very strict rules on the range. You check in every day and you go through an orientation. The cows often have longer, but thinner horns. I think killing one isn't that hard, but trophy hunting might be different. Spot and stalk is the way to go.

My dad shot one when I was like 10 and I was with, its a yearling though. I'll never forget it took him like 6 shots. He was stationed at Holloman AFB. We just drove the roads from what I remember, occasional glassing but this was 20 years ago. I remember most other people drove the roads too.

The one we went on was like the 2nd or 3rd week in a row in that area so I remember them saying many were killed already. I know where the photo is I'll dig it up and post it.

We saw another one 2-3 times in the same spot but both horns were broke in half. You are technically supposed to shoot the first one you see I believe, last day after not seeing any others we went back to look for it and of course never found it then we lucked upon the yearling.

We hunted them a lot like Pronghorn. Drive and glass, which was funny because I remember both the ones we saw were within like 75 yards of the roads.

But we used to see the large herds roaming around White Sands Missile Range all the time. Those were really cool.

I remember reading something about a guide that takes lottery winners on the white sands. Not sure about details or where I read it but could check into it.

There's a couple of different units they hunt. The one my dad was drawn for was a rarer one from what I remember, it was further away. I believe it was north of Las Cruces on the west side of the mountain range where as most are on the east side I believe. It's been a long time.
