Yeah that thing is awesome until someone has too much to drink and becomes a weapon of mass destruction.

Best thing until you over flIp it right into your leg and have to be rushed to the hospital. Happened to a guide my dad was fishing with.

This is where my fear comes from

Thanks sportsman

I don't care anymore, but thanks for the advice. I was terrified of them for a while. Now, I just grab them with the grabbers and use pliers to get the hook out. I'm not gentle

Yeah, I've only seen one person get hit when using a flipper, but it was destined to happen. He was piss drunk and wanted to do it himself like a kid. Well, he flipped the old hardhead, which stuck him in the right thigh, bounced and stuck the left calf, then landed deep in the top of his foot. He was so drunk that he didn't feel it. I was astonished.

This wasn't a flipper. He was being an idiot and swinging the pole around, hitting the fish with the surface of the water. He missed, the fish came in the boat, the line wrapped around my leg and the dorsal fin got me in the calf. I was 15 at the time and it was one of the most painful things I have ever felt. The spine stayed in there for a while. God it was miserable. And the best part is that the rubbing alcohol on the boat was about 5 years old. So nothing.

Is this some kind of demon catfish? I've never had trouble getting one off the hook, much less having a dorsal spine go through my leg.

I'm assuming you're talking saltwater, ie hardhead catfish. Those things hurt like a son of a bitch.

Those are the worst! Because you can't even grab them with the grabbers.

Jester - Yep. Saltwater hard heads.

I'm glad guys are complaining about these guys too, thought it could have been a girl issue

How to be a 4" hardhead

Fins out at 90 degrees for maximum death violently flopping everywhere. Curse the fisherman out in fishy talk by saying WONK WONK WONK WONK and NEVER STOP FLOPPING.

The catfish unhooker has been around forever, but one trick that most people don't know about that I will sware on, is if you do accidentally get stung by a catfish, you rub the slime off the belly area onto where you were stung. It takes away most of the sting and you will feel 10 times better in the long run.
