Wife has 2011 GMC Acadia.

AC cools only while in D and moving, not cooling when in D but at a light or stopped in traffic.

What damage am I looking at? What should I try before going to mechanic (Freon recharge kit)?

Thanks

I had a vehicle (Ford 500) that did that. Ended up being a valve inside the compressor that needed to be changed. Cost $200

Stop using the AC before you burn up your compressor.

Poor airflow to the condensor is the culprit.

Either your condensor had 50 million bugs in it... Or, the more likely problem, you need a new condensor fan.

get the 4 seasons dual fan and change it out yourself

What am I looking at cost wise for that at local mechanic not a national chain like firestone?

verify that the fan isn't coming on first. One fan is your radiator fan that comes on when the engine reaches operating temperature. The other should immediately come on when the ac compressor engages.

Fan comes on when ac compressor engages. I assume radiator fan is coming on also since car does not overheat

Is the blower pushing air? I've had to replace the resistor in mine twice. Pretty simple fix.

Yes blower is pushing air. Just not cool air when at a standstill.

I'd clean the condenser and radiator first. I.e. wash it out being careful not to booger up the fins on the condenser and radiator. A spray nozzle on a water hose will booger them up from close range.

Also check or replace the cabin air filter, won't matter much on hot air vs. cold air but will restrict cool airflow over the evap (that is if your vehicle has such a filter).

ok. Not sure what it is then.

How difficult/easy is that to do? I am not mechanically inclined and have no mechanic tools.

you said the fans come on. I don't think this is your issue.

Gotcha, mine would cool but air would only forced through when moving. Sounded a little like what you were describing. Apparently a common problem with GMs in that age range.

Could it be as simple as being low on Freon and a recharge kit would fix it? or is that usually just a temporary fix?

Could also be your compressor going bad. Similar experience with a 2007 Saturn Vue. Had the Honda 3.5L in it but used a GM AC system. AC just wouldn't cool at low speed or idling but would cool when up to speed. That was mainly because of engine RPM not the car moving. The high side would leak through the compressor to the low side so the compressor couldn't get the high side pressure up until the engine RPMs increased. Easy to check. Put a gauge on the low pressure port. When the car on and AC on full blast the low side pressure should be around 40psi give or take depending on air humidity and temperature. If it's like 65psi with the car idling and doesn't drop until the RPMs increase your compressor is going bad.

Might as well check it. Mine did similar things when it was low

highly unlikely. When the air stops blowing cold you need to open up the hood and verify the compressor clutch is engaged.
