Nikki a tagged black bear has been showing up at the same spot for a couple of years when the salmon run. Last year she had two cubs, this year she has three. She's a cinnemon color black bear with three cubs.

Watching her is very interesting, she'll make the cubs climb a tree while fishing but today she didn't and one got temporarily lost. It's a horrible sound listening to a cub cry, but she had the little guy back under her nose in a matter of minutes. It's a beautiful thing to watch nature at work in an intact ecosystem.

Phone pics so they're not so great.

Beautiful.

I have killed over 30 species of mammals on this planet. But I have never had an desire to kill a bear.

All the violent bear videos i see online.... Killing a calf and killing a deer. I'd kill every bear i saw. Because if they can do that to a 150-250lb animal imagine what a bear could do to a small child or an adult.

I feel the same way. Love watching them when the salmon are in. It's fascinating. Just don't have the desire to kill them.

It's a unique opportunity to get up close to them when the salmon and berries are thick. They don't care about people, only food. Springtime is a little more dangerous.

You don't understand animal behavior.

Not so great?? You got a mother and cubs plus a shot with her grabbing salmon on a cell phone!! Plus I'm pretty sure three cubs is unusual. That's off the charts. It looks like you're 30 yards away?? Always love your Alaska pics. Thanks.

I've got better pics, I just can't do as well with this cell phone though.

I was about 15 yards away in a couple of those. I tend to get a bit close sometimes when I don't have a sufficient lens.

Wow. Do they not get a little defensive with her cubs around?

In certain situations. Whey they are fishing, they are perfectly safe. Black bears aren't territorial like brown bears but are protective. But she takes care of the cubs, puts them in a safe place then goes about her business. It's fun to watch.

About half a mile away. This was on a trail. There's a little footbridge over the creek where I took a couple of the shots.
