What’s the best go to for optics at night?

Go thermal for a rifle scope. Thermion is one of the better options.

I have a lot of fun with my Thermion 2 XP50.
I’ll be hog hunting all night this Friday with it.

I have the Super Hogster Thermal. Ran about $2500.

I beg everyone here not to waste your money on that scope.

Do you truly want what’s best? You didn’t give a budget. I ask because if you want what’s best, you’re looking at $10k plus.

Ive used my buddy's pulsar as mentioned by others and it is friggin amazing...i just got a sightmark 5k mini nvg for $449 as a step into night stuff and if i keep at it will end up with a pulsar...have read some good reviews on the new sightmark thermal so will do more reading

You said night vision - are you including thermal in this because that is what everyone has been throwing out.
Pulsar has some good night vision optics along with the sightmark wraith for the cheap route
Thermal is the king for night hunting.
For themral:
- what's your budget?
- what's your average shot distance?
- how often will you use the scope?
- target animal?
- Hunting out of a deer stand or off a tripod in open fields?
Do research on resolution, sensor sensitivity (mK rating), 12 vs 17 micron and scope features.
Don't take the word of random internet guys throwing out every name brand there is because their frields cousin shot 3 pigs with his new thermal. You are the one whose going to spend $3-$6k so know what you are getting
Do your needs lean better to a 3-3.5x base mag or a 2x base. Do you need higher resolution (640-1280) or would a 384 suit your needs?
Buy once. Cry once. 384 resolution optics are the lowest you should go. It might be great for your needs but the industry standard is 640 res. The tech is advancing to 1024-1280 res lately.
Most here will argue a 384 is sufficient and ill say it is for most because most buy these scopes and use them 5x a year. I thermal hunt 1-3x a week year round. I want the best.
I currently run a Pulsar Thermion XL50 LRF and have run the Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50 PRO LRF for the last two years. I have owned two pulsar trail 384 resolution scopes before that.
I have been around nvision, iray, agm and atn users. My opinion - outside of pulsar and nvision - save your money.

Is that sensor resolution or display resolution?

Sensor resolution.
Display resolution for most pulsar scopes is an AMOLED 1024x768.
Extra fact: the thermion XL50 has a 1024x768 thermal sensor resolution and a 1024x768 screen resolution. 1:1 ratio allows for cleaner transmission of the thermal image making it a very crisp image. It also allows for better image retention when zooming.

For hunting? For surveillance? For when the SHTF?

Thanks. I've been contemplating thermal for a while. I may wait for the price to come down. I'd be a 10-20 times a year night varmint hunter. Hogs aren't too bad but time to time we run the circle trap. Coyotes would be a plus as they've been after the cattle more lately. I'll be a 6mm ARC upper as I need to reach 500 yards.

That is a hell of a poke, especially at night. You will need a high end thermal. High resolution 12 micron thermal.
Pulsar XL50 or XG50
Nvision Halo XRF
When you zoom a thermal you lose resolution. Double the zoom = half the resolution.
640 res at 3x is now 320 res at 6x
385 res at 3x is now 192 res at 6x
You get a low end thermal and start zooming in to a 500yd target you will be looking at a pixel blob.
