LINK to the Story

quote:

Thanksgiving is a time for celebrating good fortune, though not all Montanans have much to celebrate. But thanks to a few programs, fortunate hunters are sharing their bounty to help low-income Montanans feel a little less hungry.
quote:

So far, Yellowstone Wild Game Processing east of Bozeman has processed 1,300 animals this fall, including bears and a mountain lion or two. “We’ve got deer on pallets, we’ve got deer in a refrigerated truck, we’ve got deer in the trailer,” said Patti Jones of Yellowstone Wild Game Processing. “It’s always busy at this time of year – the deer pour in.”
quote:

Under Hunters Against Hunger, a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks program created by the 2013 Legislature, hunters have two opportunities to be charitable. First, every hunter who buys a Montana license can donate a dollar or more to go toward processing donated carcasses and it turns out that hunters favor donating more. Recent FWP numbers show that the average resident hunter donates more than $3 while the average nonresident donates almost $10. This year, resident hunters tripled the almost $14,000 they donated last year. Add in almost $19,000 donated by nonresident hunters and more than $60,000 go to the processing of food-bank game. Second, hunters can drop off their excess game to be butchered for the benefit of others.

We are an evil bunch.

I may be wrong, but LA doesn't have a program like this, do we? Thats a shame.

I would probably kill more does if i could donate them.

I like reading those kinds of stories. Here in Lake Charles we have Take Aim at Hungry which is similar to that program.

Guess i should have researched. Hunters4hungry does this in the Shreveport area, just 1 processor (Cottens) that participates.

Pretty cool that they give you the Backstrap and Tenderloin and keep the rest for free.

partially wrong

If I'm not mistaken, it's a private charity Hunters for the Hungry in Louisiana, not a government program

Health Department response to Louisiana Hunters for the Homeless program

quote:

The Dept. of Health and Hospitals ordered the staff at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to throw 1,600 pounds of donated venison in garbage bins – and then ordered then to douse the meat with Clorox – so other animals would not eat the meat.

quote:

“Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana,” said a Health Dept. official in an email to Fox News. “While we applaud the good intentions of the hunters who donated this meat, we must protect the people who eat at the Rescue Mission, and we cannot allow a potentially serious health threat to endanger the public.”

I haven't heard anything about that. If you have it, post it. The link I posted was the last information I was told.
