I have several battles and they work fine for me. I'm on a med student budget though, so YMMV.

I've gone thru dozens of brands while guiding, I'm stuck on the pflueger president for inshore fishing. A very underrated brand.

I had a bad experience with pflueger. I'll probably never go back to that brand.

I have the President and had to get the Sedona when I was home in Natchitoches until my brother can order another one, the President has been awesome so far and it was $60. My dad had a real smooth $200 reel but I can't remember the brand, it may have been the Abu Revo.

Stradic is a great reel. GF bought me one for birthday couple years ago and no problems.

I used to work on reels as a college job.
All the reels that have been mentioned will be just fine as long as they are taken care of. Even the nicest shimano will turn to shite if abused and not cleaned. That said, the dirty and abused shimano or penn will still be nicer than some clean cheaper options

ETA: need more coffee to remind me how to spell. Like a blind bat over here this morning

Buy a bunch of okuma avengers, and when they foul up throw them overboard and use another one. They go on sale for 20-30 bucks, and they are pretty good reels.

It takes a while for them to foul up. I started buying them years ago from puglia's, when Anthony recommended them. I also like shimanos but the anti reverse goes out on them on the reg.

I moved from them to the Mitchell Avocet. The avengers were feeling rough after only one season of 100% fresh water. Avocet is now my cheap go-to spinner.

last one or two trips in the salt, but smooth enough otherwise.

Wait, one or two trips? You're doing something wrong. Even the cheap-arse Quantums last longer than that.

they will work, but they feel like there is sand in the bearings.

I am pretty tough on gear, I am also pretty hard on my liver, the two kinda go hand in hand.

True dat. I love those but the trigger mech doesn't last.

Any other brands that have trigger mechanisms that last?

Had a sahara and the anti reverse stopped working. Just purchased a new quantum smoke inshore. Held it in cabela's and read a lot online about it. Supposed to be a solid reel.
