I currently have a Daniel Defense V11 Pro as my only rifle/AR (5.56). I love my V11 but I'm getting the urge to get something else to go with it. The primary use will be for plinking, maybe self defense, and possibly taking some tactical classes. I really don't have a clue what to get. I have some interest in an AK or the Daniel Defense M4 300s (300BLK). I think I would like something smaller and lighter than what I have now. I have a good stock pile of .223 ammo so I'm not sure if I should get something in the same caliber just for the ease and cost of ammo storage or a different caliber. I would like something that is a little different to shoot than what I already have. My budget is probably less than $1,800. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Every man needs himself a .22.

Get a S&W M&P 15-22

Edit to fix my lack of typing skills.

For $1,800, you can buy several rifles.

Start with a 10/22 and go from there.

I've got a very lightly used, stainless Mini-30 with some accessories that I'd be happy to sell you. It's definitely not lighter, but it sure is different.

I am ok with that. I have one sitting in my safe for my 3 year old son.

10-22 or 15-22 would be first choice. This would leave OP around $1,500 to buy another one or two rifles.

My 15-22 is by far my favorite gun to shoot

I was thinking with his budget, a dedicated AR tackdriver in .22LR. But your way would be a great choice for someone on a tight budget.

Ooh, I know. 15-22 and a suppressor.

$300-350 for the gun.
$200 stamp
$150 trust
$300-400 suppressor

~$1000

Heck, he could buy a M&P Sport II on top of that and stay under $1800.

I'm thinking, with $1800 in play, maybe a MK18 build is on the table?

does he still need trust and stamp?

I really don't know much about those other than what google tells me. How much are they? If I were to do an SBR I'd want it in .300aac suppressed...

Yes.

DD retails one for about $1900. I suspect a hobbyist could complete one for less than that - enough to get the stamp and, maybe the trust done.

While this is certainly an attractive build, too, I like an SBR in 5.56mm, with a focus on light weight, as an alternative to an extremely ultralight non-NFA option at that end of the battery.

I just really love my .300 suppressed. So do my kids.

Without the suppressor it's really light. Also, I reload and making .300 out of .223s is ridiculously easy.

Thanks. I haven't had the chance to try and reload subs yet. May give it a shot this weekend if I can get my hands on some powder.

I wand to say I've used accurate 5744. I think it was 11.1 gr with the 208 amax.

I'll have to check. It's a newer model, purchased new in 2012 or 2013 IIRC (I got it as a gift). I put a wood stock and handguard on it and a Nikon Scope. I have an unmounted replacement rear sight (Accuracy Systems), a couple of 5 and a couple of 20 mags for it, original black, composite stock, roto molded case and some soft point ammo. It's had about 150 rounds through it (I just haven't shot it much). Send me an email at chilecabro-at-gmail-dot-com and I'll send pics and such.

What about one of the H&K MP5 clones? Guess it's technically a pistol not a rifle but they can be SBR'd and are just cool.
