Apologies in advance for the length (that's what she said!), but please read. I need the OB's help!

I will soon be entering my third and final year of law school, and I am currently interning this summer at a local firm. While my assignments generally consist of monotonous legal research pertaining to civil disputes, I was recently given the fun task of planning/advising a client about possibly hosting an opening day dove shoot to raise a little money for a local charity and to also provide a little extra income to cover costs related to planting fields come deer season.

While I have been on a few big dove hunts myself, I have certainly never planned one before and don't know too much about the process or the ins-and-outs. I've always just showed up, hunted, and drank a little beer. As such, I figured I would turn to the OB for a little advice.

For those of you with experience in hosting/planning a dove shoot, and also for those who have been to these dove shoots in the past....

How much are tickets generally for these events and how much is too much? Did this include a pre-hunt meal? What's a reasonable price? (The landowner has also expressed interest in having a BBQ).

Have you ever had to show proof of a valid hunting license or sign a waiver? Want to make sure everything is legal and don't want to be sued in the case someone ends up in the ER with a face full of 7 1/2's. But also don't want to make the hunt feel like not a hunt.

How many people is too many people to attend? Not exactly sure about the size of the field just yet, but what is a good general rule of thumb regarding hunters per acre?

Did you assign spots or just let people spread out on their own? How far should the spacing be between hunters?

Should the rule be no alcohol until after the hunt is over? That seems certainly like the most responsible decision.

Finally, any and absolutely all additional advice is certainly welcome. I am sure I am missing 1,00 different things. If you guys were setting this up, what would be the way you would go about this?

Thanks in Advance! I look forward to reading what the almighty OB has to contribute to this project! I need all the help I can get so I can knock this project out of the park. (The founding partner is the one who gave me this project!)

My first question as well. Because if not you better hurry up and buy some winter wheat. It gets real scarce by august!

What's the legality of hunting over top sown wheat? I understand you can hunt over it if it's planted in line with your state extension recommended guidelines. Should you wait for it to germinate though to be safe?

Fields have been planted with brown top millet and was done around mid-June. He's also planning on planting wheat soon (maybe).

In the past, he's planted fields for dove but just mainly for personal use. Nothing like this.

You could make them sign a waiver. I don't but I only have friends and I do have GL insurance-40 years and only 2 with a bit of spent shot, me being one of them.

Alcohol after the hunt and if these are strangers I would assign spots. Not sure how many, depends on layout of the land. We spread out about 100 yards I guess along tree lines and power lines.

No idea on charging I've never done it. We always have a couple of camp queens cooking and it runs the gamut but jambalaya and white beans feed a crowd.

We always have a few 4 wheelers and if we don't have enough people someone will run down the middle of the field to stir them up if it gets slow. Crop dusters always get them flying. And I stay out late because my best shooting tends to be at dusk.

I've gotten ticketed for this before. Green jeans called it "rallying"

Green jeans doesn't come onto my private property plus he couldn't prove what the hell we are doing.

Up in Oklahoma, most outfitters charge $75-100/gun with no food provided. For a charity event, especially if you're confident in having good bird numbers and serving food (I would assume all alcohol is byob) then $100/gun is reasonable in my opinion.

I've paid between $100-200 for opening weekend.

I've always signed a waiver of some sort, though I don't believe it provides you much protection.

One place used to provide a meal before the hunt. That was when the season started at noon. I don't think it's necessary to serve food, but a hot meal around lunch would probably be welcomed.

I would put out numbered flags for stands, then draw numbers for each group. First group who gets their number pulled gets to pick which spots they hunt. A map of the property and stands is needed.

People will move around during the day and that's usually no problem. But it's good to get people started in a set location.

I've never been on a dove shoot with no beer. Hopefully I never will.

I think I can change that by sending my brother a link to this thread

I've seen gals in bikinis on those 4wheelers/golf carts bringing "refreshments" to the stands. I assume there was absolutely no intent to break the law.

I wouldn't check licenses, but would say in the paperwork that participants are responsible for obtaining one prior to the hunt.

Well I guess I meant in 40 years green jeans has never come on my property except to have dinner at the house.

But if I get a ticket from riding a four wheeler in my own soybean or corn or cotton field I will argue that in court.

If the OP goes this route, the price should vary based on the attractiveness of the gals. It should also be inversely proportional to the amount of fabric on the bikinis themselves.

Also, is this a Birmingham firm you're working for? Any chance an OB'er could get an invite?

Birmingham firm, but landowner is located in south Alabama. Once I get all the details, I will update with date, time, place, etc.

Hopefully I will also be able to extend an invitation.

I used to work for an outfitter that did an opening day dove hunt. We were mainly a waterfowl outfit but the dove hunt helped offset pumping water for teal season and buying other more important shite like decoys, etc..

We would run anywhere from 75-100 hunters in a pretty large field. Normally charged $100 for a half day shoot but would usually have a BBQ which was included. We typically gave out wristbands for proof of payment. We always had a waiver to sign and proof of license was required on waiver. It's somewhat of a hassle to do that but just set up a table with some help as in someone collects money, someone hands out pens/waivers, and someone passes out wristbands. I have no real answer for how many people per acre. However, we do go set the people up in the field dropping hunters off on wheelers or in trucks. It's typically just setting hunters out in a safe distance from each other so people don't get peppered. That usually works until the birds start flying and then hunters will move as flight patterns dictate but generally most folks know to keep their distance if you explain well enough as you set them out to stay a safe distance from each other but most dove hunters tend to be gentlemen about things and if one spot is killing them, they will generally let others creep in or at the least, yell as doves fly by that they miss seeing or miss shooting.

As for booze, you do not want hunters drinking in the field. Repeat, you DO NOT want hunters drinking in the field. This is from an outfitter perspective and it might be be ok if it's among friends but trust me, if green-jeans shows up to check it will become an issue. It's fine after the hunt at the BBQ but it needs to be BYOB or just be ready for the liability if you provide booze. Trust me, you can't police everyone coming and going at an event this size.

Awesome. I have family scattered all over south Alabama. My uncle does a little dove shoot on his property but it is fairly limited in number. I'll reach out to him and see if he has any tips.
