Don't know anything about 'em, but I want it to have a few functions:

1) be able to fish(very recreationally)out of

2) be able to get a bit of excercise with if I want to

3) big enough to be able to take my son out in (thats why it needs to be a 2-manner--i knoe most are for just 1 person)

Any advice on brands, pruces, and where to shop around Baton Rouge appreciated.

Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandem. The front seat is removable and can be used as a one man craft very easily (I've fished out of it as a 1 man craft dozens of times and its a great platform for that). It is super stable.

MSRP is somewhere around $1400 I think, but you can probably find a used one for around $1000 if you keep your eyes peeled.

ETA: Didn't realize the price had jumped recently - Pop is right - it's about $1800

I agree with ultimate tandem being the best bet.

You get rear tankwell space for fishing gear storage also.

As others have already stated, you should definitely look at the Native Ultimate tandem. There was one in CL recently for $1k in laffy. (If you email them though, keep in mind it's the original model-2008ish. I'd try to get them down to $700)
They have a new Ultimate Fx that has a lot of improvements and was on sale at Masseys recently for $1500

Jackson big tuna is also an option and is a SOT, so the scuppers will drain any water that gets inside.

Hobie tandem pro angler is legit... But way expensive. Lol but if money is no option...

Here's the one in Lafayette. Says price is firm but worth a shot.

I was quite surprised to find out both Massey's and P&P have already sold a handful of these. Add in tax and rigging and you're looking at $6k+. I couldn't even imagine I'd ever be in a position to justify that cost. Something that much better have a motor hanging off the back of it.

That one in Lafayette is a nice deal at $1000 but you can probably get a few dollars off.

It looks like they have phased out the Ultimate 14.5 Tandem for the Ultimate FX15 tandem, along with the price hike.

KC Kayaks has a two man. Not sure if they are selling them to the public yet, maybe you can give them a call and find out. I'm sure that it's very stable and would provide plenty of room for 2 people.

Backpacker has also sold a couple... And evidently one owner has already managed to flip it out in the surf at Elmers!

As to the ultimate on Craigslist, ask him the year- it will be the last 2 digits on the hull #. Back when he bought it, the ultimate tandem was only $1400 or so to begin with... And with the added features from newer model years, the kayak isn't appreciating...
Not a horrible price if it is in as great condition as stated, but not a steal by any means

How old is your son?

Another option is a canoe/ kayak hybrid. It has two seats but you can take one out and the other seat is on a track that can slide to the middle to give proper balance when solo. The open cockpit also gives lots of room for fishing.

Edit to remove some incorrect info. My experience is with Touring kayaks not fishing so made some incorrect points

Native Ultimate 14.5
Jackson Big Tuna
Native Magic 14.5(discontinued, but can occasionaly find one on Craigslist)

All of these are useable as a one or two man craft, simply by moving the seats.

Alternatively, most any 15" or longer canoe can be operated with two, or you can turn it around a sit backwards in the front seat to use as a solo.

In BR, Massey's or the Backpacker have the best selection. The boats at Academy and BassPro are typically too generalist to be really good flatwater boats.

All the other tandems mentioned in the thread allow the seating to be changed from tandem to solo quite easily!

Op, another couple options would be a KC kayak or, depending on how old your son is, I have seen several people bring their kids in their pro anglers

Someone just posted a yellow 14.5 Ultimate on the LKFC forum as well for $900. Not sure if it's the same one as the descriptions are a little different but it might be.

Son is 6.

Am intrigued. Honestly, was not expecting such baller answers(though that was clearly naive of me). I'm looking in the $500-$800 price range. Mind you, I am no professional fisherman nor kayaker. Just looking to get a little exercise a couple times of week and to be able to spend some time with my boy and likely my father. The memories will be more much, much more than the fish.
