My tastes in guns is getting more esoteric as I get older

Over the years I've gone from Commie military rifles to wonder nines to big bore hand cannons to the modern sporting rifle. After playing with my old man's old lever action 30-30 Marlin I've found a lot of enjoyment shooting older action types from the lever action, single action revolvers, to my granddad's old Winchester model 61 pump 22. Those got me into playing with an old black powder revolver which I've had a lot of fun screwing around with. Reading black powder forums now has me itching to build an old muzzle loader. I won't go as far as going with flintlock but something like this that is percussion fired.
Not just old muzzle loading pistols but now I want to build an old southern mountain long rifle.
Problem is I can't just sneak these into the gun cabinet. These will take a bit of garage time to get them bedded and finished.

Best part is that you can mail order the whole rifle no FFL

I got a Thompson Center Hawken 50 cal kit in 1979 and did all the wood work, many hours sanding and applying the sealer; shaving to fit snugly and smoothing out the barrel. I used a browning as opposed to bluing, technique.
One of the most satisfying things I have done. No pics. maybe later. Will pass on to MSWebfoot if he treats me right in my ole age.

Get a Hawken gun, .50 caliber or better. You can't go no better.

I am with you my brother. I have a flintlock and several percussion rifles and handguns. Love em and the overpowering stinky smoke as well!

The most nervous I've ever been shooting a firearm was when I would shoot my 1896 mauser from the 1910 Persian contract. All I could envision was the bolt coming back into my face every time I pulled the trigger

I would advise a Lyman GPR in 54 cal percussion twist for patched roundball.

First gun I ever bought with my own money was a great plains rifle. To save money I bought the unfinished gun kit version. That was a mistake. I was so anxious to shoot the thing I did an absolute shite job of finishing it.
Shot one deer with it at 90yrd with iron sites. Absolute zero blood trail. Was conviced I'd missed it after 2hrs of searching but on way back I glanced down in creek and there she was. Good shot but I guess the round lead ball doesn't have very good expansion properties..
Doubt I will ever take it deer hunting again--its a pita to clean.
