Began crying incessantly that his hands itched and burned. This is the second time this has happened, and both were in diffferent yards. There isn't a rash when this happens, but whatever it is is really painful until I get enough anti itch cream on it. Any idea what he's touching? I'm assuming a plant of some kind, but like I said never a rash so wasn't thinking it was poison ivy or oak.

poison oak/ivy wouldn't be felt that soon. Takes a day or so, and you would see whelps.

there are some plants that will make you itch/burn like a mofo for about 30min-hour. Crushing the leaves/stems releases whatever it is that burns. IIRC, there isn't much visible sign to go along with the burning. Elephant Ear is one plant that will light you up but there are several that do the same.

This is off the wall suggestion but here goes...

Is the area he's played in new?

There was an instance near me where a land developer brought in a bunch of oilfield dirt for cheap and it had caustic from the drilling mud all over the place. Kept burning the kids hands when they played in it. They had to dig down like 3 ft to remediate it.

The contractor cut a deal on cheap soil.
