!0 year old Lab tore his left rear ACL. Vet has him on pain pills and anti-inflammatory pills. Trying to keep him as still as possible and will follow up after 4 weeks.
Has anybody else gone through this and had success without surgery?

We had a lab who tore his. Had a successful surgery and rehab. They say once they tear one the chances of them tearing the opposite one will increase dramatically, and sure enough he ended up tearing his other one.

Yeah i tore mine in minor league baseball sliding into home. took me about 1.5 years after the surgery to get back to full speed. Just dont skimp out on the rehab, take youre time and when you think youre 100%, youre really around 80%...keep rehabbing

Will be good to go in no time

Happens too often in the sport dog world. They recover surprisingly quick and well. Only issue is when the dog tears 1 they are statistically at a much higher risk to tear the other(in the near future). Alot of research going on to find out the unknowns about ligament and joint tears in dogs.

LINK

ETA: Yes I had a friend with a house dog that tore his ACL. They couldn't afford the surgery and decided the dog would be ok on basically 1 leg(it was a small old house dog). About a month later the dog blew his other ACL out. Then they had to decide on putting the dog down or getting the surgery. He had to sell his motorcycle to pay for a double ACL repair. Sucks but it happened. Now he wonders if the 2nd tear was due to too much stress being on 1 leg, and if he would've got the surgery originally would he only have had to pay for 1 and still have his motorcycle. True Story, just happened a few months ago.

Had a dog tear his. After lots of research and discussion with a gfong friend who was a retired vet we decided not to have any surgery Recovery time was about the same with or without surgery. Maybe if this was an active young pup but this was an older on on the tail end of his lifespan who spent more time sleeping than awake For about 3-4 weeks would never put any weight on it. Gradually started putting more and more weight on it until he was walking/running again after maybe 3 months. Was never as spry as before he tore it. He couldn't jump on the bed any more was really the only way you could tell he was changed.

Check with Dr braud in Gonzales, he does this surgery and is considerably less expensive than most, and he is good

At least he'll be able to tell all the other pups he was headed to the league before he messed up his knee.

If it is really torn, I dont think it can heal it self.

Little dogs get the tendon tied back with monofilament, much cheaper.

Big dogs need surgery. Was 3500 a few years ago. Takes ab 6 months before they are fully back. But they can hop out the vets office with a sling after surgery.

My dad (who is a vet) did a double ACL surgery on his 100 lbs pitbull. Worked fine. Dog is running around perfectly now.

We went thru it twice with our Australian Shepherd, once with each leg two years apart. She recovered well both times. The doctor did recommend surgery.

We kept her as still as possible for first week and a half, and had to put footies on her foot for walking on the hardwood.

My wife said $5k surgery and don't let him get fat during recovery, and yes good chance he'll tear the other one. Another $5k. But he'll heal and be good.

Mine tore his while I was in school in BR. Drove him to Houston and my parents took him to Texas A&M. They did a fantastic job. The recovery sucked because he wanted to be active and couldn't. Had to give him lots of massages and you have to manipulate the knee.

This is the part I'm having trouble with. We have to hold him down when I feed him because he gets so excited he starts jumping around.

My parents 9 year old lab torn her ACL a year ago. My parents didn't want to do the surgery because she would have to stay in the kennel for 8 weeks straight. They have been going to some guy who does acupuncture for dogs. It's amazing what it did, she is now running. A year ago she wouldn't put any weight on her leg now we have to slow her down so he doesn't hurt herself again. I would of never believed it if i didn't see.
