Have this incredible itch to do more trail-riding so i want to upgrade my $150 POS mongoose and buy something between the $500-$1000 range. What are some of the better brand bikes out there?recommend any websites?...pics of yours? is there any other advice you could give to this novice rider?

Specialized giant trek cannondale. You can get a very nice bike in that range. Absolutely recomend a 29er

I bought a Gary Fisher Wahoo 29er for $750 and it has been great. It's a hard tail and I have yet to ride a trail I didn't feel great on.

Trek and specialized are the top two.
But components are what you pay for at that price level.
Honestly I'd recommend buying used. You could probably step up a level in either frame or components. Then you have a better base to improve upon.

There are a ton of good deals on used bikes online. People buy bikes out of impulse and then realize they don't have the time or stamina to keep going with it, so craigslist is your friend. Specialized makes some nice bikes as do the brands mentioned by others. DEFINITELY go with a 29er if you're serious. It's night and day from a smaller bike. Also, disk brakes are a nice feature to have.

Trust me find a bike with air forks. I bought a 700 Raleigh 2 years ago and it's really crap honestly. Buy used. Bikes lose all thier value but are still very rideable at the 1-2 year old mark.

Used or find a holdover from last year.

I bought a very nice Trek with good components for about $600.
If you're serious about trail riding you don't want a 29er since they don't have the responsiveness of the smaller tires. If you're going to be doing more straight Tammany Trace kind of rides, then the 29er is great for that.

Why do you say this? I have the Raleigh tokul 2 and it's been awesome. Has a 120 millimeter forks with hydro disk breaks.
Also, don't get a 29er, go 650b aka 27.5. It's what all the big down hill guys are going to and it's for a reason

The fork on my bike is junk. The hydro brakes are bottom of the line and the drive train is weak. Don't get me wrong raliegh makes great bikes for the price but in the grand scheme of things anything at that price is very entry level. If I had it all to do again, I'd find a uses cannon dale Scott or giant hard tail with 2x10 drive train, air forks, and quality hydro breaks. Those brand new world run 1500-1800 but could be found 2-3 years old for the ops price range. Again just my experience from my entry level bike whipping my arse at comite trails.

I have a trek Marlin that would be in your price range and it's been a great bike . Wish I had spent the money and got a softail though

Specialized or Giant were the two I looked at couple years back when I made the purchase. I went with Giant only because I liked the color combo over the Specialized. Cant go wrong with either.

I've rode all over the Alps when living overseas. That bike is crap. I actually have a 2007 Santa Cruz Chameleon custom built, 2004 Marzocchi Z-150 Freeride (one of the best forks you can/could buy) I don't ride it anymore down here in La. Besides hunting, fishing and coaching I just don't have the time. PM if interested. You won't find a better deal and I'll even get a fresh tune-up if interested.
Height and Weight would help recommend something as well...
I guess there is no PM lol

I have a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29. Think I paid about $1100 a couple of years ago. Works well for me.
