I'm not a handgun guru like most on here. I've got an inherited 22 revolver but always considered 12 gauge buck shot as my go to home defense. If I were to start carrying regularly, what's the best brand and caliber?

Springfield XDS in .45 is the smallest production .45 made, 6 shot mag + 1 in chamber, trigger and grip safety.

I carried a full-size XD 45 until this one came out, it has been my every day carry ever since.

I carry it in an IWB under my shirt, wearing a golf shirt and khakis or even shorts it doesn't print and doesn't pull my belt down.

Highly recommend it.

Very broad question here.

The big question is, what method of carry do you plan to use? If you carry in a pocket, then a small 380 is pretty effective. If you plan to carry in your waistband, then a single stack 9mm is pretty effective.

But the general rule is, carry the largest gun you can comfortably carry. For me that's either a Kahr CM9 or a S&W M&P9 compact depending on my attire.

I know the Lafayette shooting has gotten peoples' emotions running high. But before you decide to get a permit and carry, really ask yourself if you are willing to deal with the responsibility associated with it. Carrying a firearm concealed is a huge responsibility and is something to take very seriously. You are held to a higher standard than the average citizen and you must back out of most situations rather than escalate them. I outline all of it here:

Ruger lCP .380 is smaller than a wallet. I have one and you can barely notice that it is in your pocket.

i have a sigp938, sig238, glock 42.... and that lcp is everything you asked for. Does it have long trigger pull? sure, not the best sights in the world? sure, but it is the lightest, smallest, most thin and comfortable i have had to carry. I bought a $20 belt clip for it and could carry in waist of gym shorts and run and never know its there.

not with the belt clip i had. i always stuck it in my back pocket when tucked in shirt. The clip looks like you have a knife clip on because gun is so small

Thanks for the advice! I've been meaning to do this but somthing else always comes up. This laf tragedy isn't the whole reason for my interest but def made it more of a priority. I've got kids that my life revolves around, I'd just like to be prepared if the situation ever presents itself.

Beretta Pico is the slimmest .380 on the market.

Side by side with lcp

Looks nice but those sights look like they would catch on everything.

I've got the S&W Bodyguard 380 simply due to its external safety. I have a 2 1/2 year old child in my house and leaving a loaded revolver or other auto doesn't sit well for me.

I am now looking at upsizing my carry gun.

I just bought a glock 42 and it's really small holds seven rounds. Shoots nicely.

A "comfy" handgun is usually a lot harder to shoot well than a "decent-sized" gun.

Of course if people think "shoot well" = one shot every 5-7 seconds, at a distance of 10-15 feet, with their shots landing in a nice 3" group, their definition differs from mine.

My definition would be to keep everything in a 6"-8" circle, at a distance of 15-20 feet, shooting at least one shot per second, and preferably 3-4 shots per second, using a 9mm or larger caliber.

Comfy guns are the LCP's, G43's, P3AT's, etc.

"Decent-sized" guns are the Glock 19's, the M&P Compact 9's, and even the Shields. You can wrap all your fingers around the decent-sized guns, and most of them will hold at least 10 rounds (15-17 rounds is a whole lot "more gooder").

The full size guns, such as the M&P's, HK's, SIG's and Glocks are even more gooder, if you can conceal a full sized handgun.

Shootability should trump concealability. You can almost always find a way to conceal a decent sized handgun -- you might not ever learn to shoot a mouse gun well.

Kahr CM9. It's one of the smallest, lightest, yet manageable 9mm's out there. They also make it in a .40 cal, but I think it holds one less round.

I shot this pistol more accurately than my Glock 17 duty weapon.

Don't know why I've put it off this long, but I've been wanting to buy the S&W shield .40.
And of course take a CC class

Might be because I just bought that AR 223 and stocking up in ammo....that reminds me, need more ammo
