quote:

Researchers at North Carolina State University created a bubble-filled metal composite that combines the strength of steel with the airiness and heat-resistant properties of foam. In tests with armor-piercing bullets, a one-inch layer of the material stopped the projectile in its tracks while allowing only an 8-millimeter indentation on the other side. Afsaneh Rabiei, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University, claims her version of metallic foam is the strongest yet.

Imagine some body armor that is as light as foam.

Do they mean actual armor piercing stuff or just FMJ? Most of the time these kinds of tests are written by the firearm-illiterate crowd.

This technology is in it's infancy. I'm sure the applications will be pretty extensive. Wouldn't mind having my car doors filled with this stuff though.

Metal with air bubbles, of uniform size, in it.

According to other articles they used the standard M2 AP round. Very sharp high Brinell (over 600HB) tool steel penetrator in those rounds, will punch though 1.5" of mild steel.
