I don't fish catch enough trout to spend the time targeting big trout, but I'm sure that's probably true for older fish.
For the rookie, looking to get started, it shouldn't be of any concern.

Curado reel---12 lb line for me.
Only time I go up on the line is if I am after bull reds or fishing on the rocks and I go with 17.
I also have some spinning reels.
H&H cockahoo is still my go to bait. I always have black with charteuse tail, those green ones with a red tail and sparkles in them and a clear one. Red jig heads. 3/8th and 1/4 ounce
I also have gold spoons in the tackle box.
I do not use leaders .

definitely not the case, and I suggest not going there. they will run you out with the quickness

Heres a great article on fishing off of Hwy 1.
This shite makes me nauseous.

I don't think I have ever come across a bigger bunch of assholes.

What are some of the various ways to fish a gold spoon?
I should have just called it a versatile lure. The common way is a straight retrieve in the middle column where the lure turns a bit. You can also work it bouncing off the bottom more jig style or use a lighter spoon to run it at the surface.
I consider these different because you can't do the same with most other hard baits. They're more likely to be a specific top water popper or walker or a suspending jerk bait that is good but just not as versatile.
As for the line shy bit, I read that somewhere and just didn't think it was a big deal to tie a fluorocarbon leader on just in case.
