I bought an older boat last year, want to replace the electronics, and would appreciate some advice and recommendations.

I want to replace the radar, GPS, and VHF. I would also like to install an AIS system. I want the radar, GPS, and AIS to interface.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Standard Horizon VHF with DSC/AiS linked to a Garmin EchoMap GPS. The GPS has a single state wide satellite photo card and was about $800 total... having used it for a year now, wish I'd gone with a touchscreen Lowrance HDS and Standard Map e-card, it's more $$ but has a better contrast between water and land. The Garmin can be hard to see in direct sunlight and the font size is not adjustable...also with sunglasses on it can be even harder to see. Also suggest you get a nice RAM mount to bring GPS closer to your eyes and have it tilt adjustable (if you dont flush mount).

The VHF is fine, I have it connected to a whip antenna on the console grab rail.

If you are fishing in the louisiana marshes I would either get a Lawrence GPS so you can use the standard mapping chip or a newer model garmin where you can use their newer map chip. Both will connect to your VHF easily. I would make your GPS selection on quality of map features.

I have an older garmin but it runs my radar and other items so I haven't updated it and all I do is run across land when I am in open water the map is so bad.

If you get a Lowrance I can hook you up with a true satellite map card for a lot cheaper than a standard map card.
Lowrance is easy to interface with the sonic hub and NEMA 2000.

what he said! lowrance units with aerial map card is awesome. everything can be hooked to your hds unit. the mapping that comes on all units nowadays is terrible for south la. like da hammer said land is usually shown where you are running. I used my map card to do some exploring the other day and I wouldn't have been able to without a good map card.
