I am guessing that is what they will replace the M249 with.

Small full automatic rifle.

Same ammo and magazines as a regular infantryman rifle.

Or do you mean what are the uses?

Gives the fireteam a way to suppress enemies with automatic fire. Its lighter than a m249 allowing one to carry more ammo.

They already replaced, supplemented is probably a better word, the SAW with the IAR. I'll be extremely surprised if they issue a fully automatic rifle to all riflemen.

Without a quick change barrel, can't see this replacing the M249 SAW.

It says rifleman, does that mean infantry? Seems like a specialist weapon. Or is it just gonna be selective fire and replace?

Well, that is sure no M14. One heavy SOB, but was fun to shoot.

what's the difference between this and just adding a drum mag to a 20" M16?
just the piston?

and these are 3 grand each?

My understanding is it has 2 inches more barrel length along with 2 inch longer free float handguards and ambidextrous charging handle. Other than that the same as the HK416 piston operated rifle. I could be wrong but that's what I've come across.

Interesting I read that it won't accept PMAGS but will accept EMAG.

They're obsessed with "MODULARITY!" Because everyone knows that infantry platoons are going to hump these with both 5.56 and 7.62 barrels, and corresponding round counts on their person.
