Thoughts on it from those that own, have owned or shot one?

Terrible trigger and sites. Wouldn’t own one unless it was given to me

Pretty much this. It sucks. Ruger version is better. Best of the .380 guns is the Sig 238 imo.

Nope. My Ruger LC-9 has the worst trigger ever. I ditched it and got the M&P Shield to carry in my purse. I love it.

But I have zero experience with the Bodyguard.

I second this.

My primary carry is the carry size Sig 1911UC in .45 but mostly I carry my P238 w/ extended 7rd mag because of size/convenience in most everyday situations.

It's damn accurate for a small framed pea shooter, built around the proven 1911 platform and has the most reliable and crisp trigger of any of my smaller pistols including the LC9S, the KelTec .32 and Kimber Micro 380.

I shot a friend's M&P 380 about 2 months ago and wasn't very impressed. Ok for plinking I suppose but would not rely on for a daily pocket pistol.

.380's are really marginal for SD purposes. But if that's what you're going to buy/carry, the M&P Shield EZ version has an excellent trigger and good sights.

P.S. Posted before the usual "I dare you to let someone shoot you with a .380" response.

LCP2 is the best for .380.

SI,
Like all the other posters, I don't personally own an M&P Bodyguard 380, but I do own 2 other 380's. I view the 380 as a gun for pocket carry when I can't carry a bigger 9mm. Although I don't want to get shot w/ a 380, I think th 9mm is a better self defense gun. Nevertheless, there are times the 380 is a better gun/easier for me to carry. A long DAO trigger pull on a pocket gun w/ no external safety lever serves as a form of a safety. But since the Bodyguard has an external safety lever, there's no reason it should have such a long trigger pull.

After having shot my son's Sig 238, I'd agree. OTOH, I think my current pocket 380, the Kahr CW380, is a better 380 for cc. I love the 1911 platform. In fact, my most common cc gun is a Kimber Micro 9. But, I don't think the 1911 type 380's are as good for pocket carry because they have a lot more projections (safety, cocked external hammer and a beavertail) to snag on the pocket during the draw. That's not the case w/ my CW380.Also, I don't like the idea of the innards of the gun being exposed to pocket lint because the hammer's cocked (as it should be for cc). I see no reason to carry a 380 on the belt as there are a bunch of 9mm's that are as easy to carry on the belt as a 380.

Surprised it took this long for the Kahr 380 to be mentioned.

I think the P238 is a solid gun but I agree with TOTH in that the hammer and thumb safety are hooks in the pocket, not to mention the metal frame makes it weigh more than a polymer frame.

I have one with the crimson trace. I don't understand what people are expecting out of this gun. For what it is, it is a deadly little pistol. I can hit pie plates with it at 10 steps every time I pull the trigger. My friends, who have shot it, can do the same. Mine has never jammed, ftf, stove piped, dry fired...anything. Just goes bang. Maybe I got the 1 in a 1,000 pistol off the line? I don't know?

Is the trigger the best? No. So what. You aren't shooting targets at 100 yards. You are using it as a last resort. As a last resort, it is fantastic considering the price point.

There are "better" pocket pistols out there, but they trade off things. The S&W Bodyguard is 12.3 ozs. The Sig is 15.2 ozs. and Kimber is 13.4 ozs. Both have better triggers, neither have a laser at that weight. For something in my pockets and in shorts, I prefer the S&W.

I live on the Northshore, you can shoot it anytime I am home and decide for yourself.

Fwiw, I put a Ruger LCP in my pants pocket and it doesn't leave an inprint. And it's cheap and accurate. To your question, the M&P 380 is a mid tier backup.
