LSU Lakes

I just moved into Blake Hall and there's a big lake right behind it. I tried to use the search for a topic about this but couldn't find anything. Anyways, are there any fish in these ponds? I'm sure there are but how hard would it be to get onto some fish? I brought my kayak and all my gear and would love to get into some bass on the weekends or after class. Any and all input is appreciated

Those lakes are pretty bad off dude.
Do you see many people in yaks fishing there?

All of those lakes are very shallow. Shallow enough for most people to be able to walk across. Doubt there's much in them.
Large lake near sorority row is a little deeper but not much. You may have a better chance in there.

The fish at the end of sorority row in the late 80s and early 90s were amazing. Short, fat and hungry. One of our members who refuses to post has a 9 lber from there.

There is a state record bass from the LSU lakes, I've seen it in the records.

I remember the article. The old dude said the bass were "spawning on shad".
Poor shad.

Why you want to bring Phi Moo And DG into this?

In the mid-80s there were a lot of spotted bass in there. Had a ton of fun with an ultralight and a Beetle Spin or a little crankbait.
The bigger lakes had better fish, but I caught more than a few where you are talking about.
Course, that was a way long time ago...

I was curious about this too, so I did a little digging. I found this. Basically, the lakes are too shallow to properly circulate, and the oxygen content is dropping fast. Over time they've filled up with runoff silt. The plan is to dredge, but the last price the corp put on it was over $20M, and no one wants to pick up the check since they still look like nice lakes, and aren't bringing down the property value of those massive houses around them.

They did some dredging when I was there. Long time ago of course.

Yeah, the article mentions that they did some a while back, but basically only found out how hard it would be to do it right. There are thousands of old cypress stumps that prevented them from doing the whole job, so they ended up just cutting a few channels. Ten years later, they were back to square one and the corp is saying the only way to fix it is to completely drain, cut out all the stumps, and bury them in a deep pit in the middle. Also, in the last 20 years regulation on removal of dredging material has gone nuts, since it contains heavy metals. The result is a 20 million dollar tab that everyone keeps passing around the table. It's sad really. All the different cover and structure on those banks makes me drool as I drive by every morning, it would be awesome if it was a thriving lake system.

If a tree linb fell in the water, you could catch a fish the next day.

yeah i just took a walk around the one behind my dorm and i could see the bottom the whole way around it (maybe 2 feet) and lots of minnows and bait fish but i doubt theres any decent sized bass in there. thanks for all the input
and yeah i know awhile ago there were a lot of bass and good sized ones too but now it just looks shitty
my best bet might be catching some bream on my fly rod

One time while kayaking along sorority row, no pole with me though, I got past the fraternity houses, right around where the crew team launches and I saw these cattail islands that were about 5-10 yards from shore where bass were thrashing around. Spring 2009 I think. Watched for about 10 minutes but got bored and left.
Check that out and let us know.
