I need a lower unit for a 50 ELPTO merc. I don't want a new one since the boat itself is 20+ years old. Do boat repair places have outboards that they could take a used one off and put on mine? I don't see spending 1200 for a new one when the motor itself isn't worth but about 2000.

When you say it went out, what exactly do you mean? They can be rebuilt. It requires a few special tools but you can usually borrow/rent them. Without knowing the damage it's impossible to say. Could be as simple as a bent prop shaft, or it could be a split case.

I'm not that mechanically inclined. I could put it gear and go about 4 or 5 mph but anything over that and it would clack and clank and not go any faster. i didn't hit anything-this time. Was in the middle of a deep canal when it happened.

You can always roll the dice and bolt on a used one (eBay or call some mechanics)

Sounds like you could have spun the hub on your propeller. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new lower unit, but if that turns out to be what it is most outboard mechanics have older parts engines floating around.

A spun prop will make noise but so will a lot of other things. I would pull the prop off to check the bushing and for marks on the thrust washer. Then run the motor on the hose with the prop still off for safety reasons and to watch the prop shaft for wobble. If it goes in and out of forward, neutral, and reverse without issues then pull the lower and check the drive shaft. A bent drive shaft will idle but make all kind of racket at higher RPM.

Only after I've checked the prop bushing, prop shaft, and drive shaft would I take the lower unit to a mechanic.

we took it off. It's not the prop. If that was the case then when I put it in forward, it wouldn't move and the prop wouldn't spin.

False. A spun prop hub will still move the boat.

Yep, I had a spun prop once that would roll pretty good, but once you got on it, it would spin and run up the rpm's.

All right fellas, put the prop back on, put it in gear, turned it, and it stopped. I put a little arse on it and the hub stayed and prop turned. Hallelujah! Spunt prop!

I didn't realize it could still spin and propel with a hub that was spun.

Thanks for the info. Will get it redone tomorrow.

I rebuilt mine in 2010 and it ran $750 in parts. You have forward gear and reverse gear with clutch dog that will
Cost the most. Rest is just seals and bearings. Took bearings and matched them at bearing house same exact mfg model etc for 1/4 of cost of mfg bearing.

It's not that hard and I pressure checked it and held 12 lbs pressure no leaks.

5 years and lower unit still going strong.
