Nice catch.
When I was a kid, that was like hitting the lottery - I'd get $20 for one that size. That was a lot of money to a 12 yr. old in the '70s.

Yeah he hit the loto this time. Let him go near the back of my property. Figure he's pretty lucky due to the fact that I found him about 5 feet from my crawling 9 month old, in my "safe" fenced in outdoor kitchen.

We called them chicken snakes too, growing up. But, the same species of snake might have ten common names throughout different regions. That's why herpetologists always use the scientific name (Pantherophis obsoletus, in this case).
