Look I will be the first to say I do not know 1/3 of what yall know in this boared so I have a few questions if someone could help me out.

There are so many different rifles out there, which do you all suggest? I'm just looking for a tactical rifle. I have viewed the AR15, the M16, and the M4 and I am struggling with making a decision.

I see a lot of yall talking about uppers and lowers, would it benefit me to purchase separately rather than an entire rifle ready to go?

Thanks appreciate any help.

First thing, a semi-automatic rifle isn't an assault rifle

Would you like some clips to go with it?

I'd edit your title because you're gonna get torched. It's not a big deal that you didn't know but it's kind of a big deal in the firearms world to use the right nomenclature. Calling it an "assault" rifle gives anti-gunners fuel for outlawing them. We don't want to ever give them a leg up.

But anyway, what do you plan on doing with the rifle? Pig hunting? Long range shooting? Personal defense? The AR15 platform is probably one of the most versatile on the planet. Knowing what you plan to do with it is important.

EDIT: Noticed you changed the title. Nice.

A great starter would be a Smith & Wesson M&P Sport. It's a lower cost AR-15 that shoots fairly inexpensive ammo. You can always swap out parts down the road. These days, you don't save a huge amount by building your own, but do get a customized rifle.

Thanks, I didn't know that to be honest, he just personal defense. I own a few hand guns but don't have a clue when it comes to this so I figured I would ask the board for some help, didn't know everyone would be so damn sensitive about it. I stated from the beginning that I didn't know much about them.

It's not really being sensitive though. It's to make you sound educated about the topic. If you go into a gun store and say "can I see your assault rifles" you're gonna be looked at differently by the people behind the counter. And even though it doesn't matter, it may piss some people off. We're helping you, trust me.

But anyway, for a basic defensive gun, I would side with Shexter and say the M&P15 Sport is a fantastic rifle. A friend of mine brought his Sport rifle to a carbine training course last weekend and fired 700 rounds on a dry, dirty rifle with 0 malfunctions. It's a great rifle.

It comes as basic as possible - iron sights with a basic grip, basic stock, basic handguard, etc. But it will always go 'bang' when you pull the bang switch.

M&P15 Sport

Even though the MSRP is over $700, you'll find this gun for much cheaper. The market is saturated with ARs right now, so you will have no difficulty finding a good deal.

Bap, not to derail the thread here, but do companies still make the old school m16 A3 style rifles with fixed stock and 20" barrel and what would be a fair MSRP (non match grade)?

Do you want a fixed carry handle also? If not, there are plenty of companies that do it like Armalite, Colt, DPMS, Remington. I actually own a 20" AR made by DPMS. I bought the upper on Midway.
