What's a good gun to start with? I will add a scope and a light . I'm looking to keep it around 700 or so for the gun. I see bushmaster, armalite, Palmetto state and several others. Im not familiar with them so need to know what's quality and what to steer clear of.

I'd start with a 300 AAC. You can always buy a 5.56 upper later on.

I had an issue with my BCG from my PSA build but they replaced the faulty part with a brand new one and it has run like a champ since then with well over 1K rounds. My rifle was somewhere in the $700 range with buying everything on sale, which is normally is on PSA. I do know that the Smith & Wesson M&P is praised on here as a great value rifle and is <$700. Ruger also got into the budget AR market and they dont make junk.

Do you want a 5.56 or a .300?

I have both but haven't shot the .30 super sonic yet.
5.56 if look at the S&W Sporter.

Was thinking about the 5.56 but the blackout has me interested.

The 5.56 will be cheaper to shoot and a lot more choices of ammo.

The .300 is shooting between 110 grain bullet to a 220 grain (subsonic).
It's a neat little round. Also, everything except the barrel is exchangeable between the two guns. Magazine, BCG, etc.

If you get the 5.56 make sure you can ear hole a pig with it. I put a ton of bullets in pigs this summer that ran off with no blood trail.

30cal bullet is a much better choice
I know the op said AR but honestly the best pig rifle available is a good ole SKS. Load up with soft points and shoot pigs at 25 cents a hole

300 blackout is good if you intend to hunt pigs but it hets really pricey. 5.56 is what I personally would shoot because it is much less costly to feed. If you choose 5.56, shoot mk262 77 grain ammo or the barnes vor-tx for it.

Get an AK. Best of both worlds. Ammo is cheap and hits hard.

Looks like Palmetto sells them for $850.

I'd actually do the opposite. 300BLK is considerably more expensive to shoot. If you plan on taking earhole shots it doesn't really matter what you're using as long as your shot placement is good.

If you're going for body shots, 300BLK is definitely better than 5.56 and will get you more penetration. But in that case I would almost recommend a 308 to get some real power into the hog. I still think even 308 is cheaper to shoot than 300BLK unless you're a handloader.

To the OP, if you want a semi auto rifle but want something with more arse behind it, I would recommend the S&W M&P10. 308 can really put a hurting on pigs. The other upside is that you can deer hunt with it without asking the age-old question, "is 223 enough for a deer?"

AR10 is the very obvious answer here if it's in OP's budget.

Why the hell do AR10's cost so much more than 15's? I wouldn't mind having one if they all weren't $1000+

ETA: the M&p 10 has a $1700 sticker

frick that

I've seen bare ones on gunbroker for a little over $1200. Still pricey but you're getting a lot more gun compared to a 300blk.

EDIT: Another suggestion would be Palmetto's AR10. I think the PSA10 comes in a good bit cheaper than the Smith. It will probably not have the accuracy of the Smith but I imagine it wouldn't be too far off.

5.56 does great on pigs according to locals I know who hunt them. They say the hydrostatic shock from the 5.56 does a better job at dropping hogs than massive blunt force trauma from 12ga slugs. The anecdotes told over a beer said the 12ga would pass through both sides and the piggies would more often than not still run a ways before dropping. 69gr or 75gr 5.56 double lung shots dropped them where they stood 9 times out of 10. But these guys are great marksmen and usually hit the spot they are aiming for. So going by what the locals do make sure you get something in at minimum 1/9 twist, 1/8 or 1/7 might be better to make sure you can stabilize the heavier 69gr+ bullets and with good shot placement they should drop pretty easy.
