I throw a 10ft cast net with 3/8 in mesh. I'm looking to upgrade to a 10ft 1" mesh as all I really throw on are mullet and big bait fish. My question is how much faster will a 1" mesh net sink than the 3/8" mesh net I throw. I miss quite a bit of bait(mullet) in water over 8 ft it seems. Also any brand suggestions? I will take care of the net and plan on having it for a long time.

It will depend on how much lead. Lot of lead and 1" mesh will sink like a cannonball.

Check out the fish net company or champlin's (both in joneville, la) or Memphis net company. I order from all of them. They will make whatever you want.

EASIEST WAY TO THROW CAST NET

Watch this video. I do the same thing with my ten foot except I have to fold the net twice in my left hand instead of once.

I will pay someone to give me lessons. I can't throw one to save my life.

It just takes practice. Watch some YouTube videos and go out in your backyard and practice. My net was my dads and he never learned to throw it. One day I decided I needed to learn so I watched the video I linked earlier and then went in the back yard to practice. An hour later I could throw a 10ft net.

That's a new one to me. I'm going to try it out tomorrow. The way I through takes a hell of a lot more technique.

Two 10' nets with the same weight but double the mesh size is likely to sink 2 to 3x faster assuming the net is made of the same material. I 've never seen a 3/8" net made from anything but mono and I've never seen a 1" net made from anything but some type of string. Therefore, I can't even remotely guess the difference because these always seem to be two totally different animals. I'd also suggest that mullet at 8' deep won't be spooked by the relative quiet camouflage that mono would give you despite sinking slower because of the finer mesh.

Sorry for the non-help....

The mullet were closer to the surface. I guess maybe I should have been quicker to close the net.

But yeah it's an old fitec 3/8's with blue mono. The website says 1lb per ft. I have no way of knowing if it was the same 15 years ago when my dad bought it.

The main reason I liked that technique is cause I could easily do that from the bow of my boat. I only have a couple feet of space on the bow where my anchor locker is and that one throwing motion allows me to get it out there over my bow rails relatively easy.
