Gulf oil spill recovery money intended for testing to ensure fish caught off Louisiana were safe for consumers instead paid for unnecessary iPads, cameras, boats and now-missing fishing equipment, state auditors said, calling the safety program so mismanaged it couldn't even declare if the catch was fit to eat.

Ya I just heard this over the radio. They need to clean house over there, at least on the administration level. Or just give all control of state water fisheries to the feds too since Melancon and Edwards are all about it and just shut down LDWF.

I suppose I am not surprised by this. You can't trust the government with money. There is no accountability anymore. I will say that every time I had to call the LDWF, they were very competent and helpful. Guess it was cause they all got new fishing gear and computers.

Is this the whole thing that you guys have been hearing about? It's not great by any means, but the article makes it sound like this was 99% the result of the department just being tossed $10M and a lot of it getting spent on dumb shite. Have to assume that money and the people responsible for misspending it are long gone.

I assume that the money is gone but the former Secretary Barham is still in state government as the director of state parks.

That's what I gathered too. If they would have justified the spending by actually using the equipment as part of the research then there wouldn't be any fuss.

Missing sporting equipment is more than likely things being lent out and not being returned. I'd imagine there maybe some equipment magically appearing soon.

Not to deflect attention off of LDWF, but why is LDWF tasked with determining the safety and suitability of seafood for consumers? Last time I checked, that was under the purview of NOAA and the FDA.

Seems like this was just some feel good money that never came from the taxpayers anyway. Sounds like it was definitely misspent, but theres plenty of other LDWF outrageous topics to focus on. Food safety was never at stake here.

Uh, how about a big fat stinkin NO!!

Don't need the damn feds determining how our wildlife and fisheries are managed.

They already control more public land in this state than the state does. Sure as hell don't need anymore control.

I'm sure that's where they'll be facing an audit soon to then. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great wasteful spending is being brought to light. I pay taxes like anyone else.

There have just been some people who have tried to tie this to why the department may not be able to afford things down the line. Not only was it a one time windfall of cash that was misspent, but they essentially are asserting that uncovering wasteful spending and eliminating it will somehow leave the department with LESS money available in the future. Seems to me it would be the opposite.

Money yes, people no...they did get rid of Pausina as this all happened on his watch...but there are still some of his cronies left behind that may or may not get caught up in this.

But again, I'm not sure there is anything that can come from this besides bad publicity. This wasn't taxpayer money.

...and I can't imagine BP going after anyone in Louisiana in court for something like this.

Exactly
It's gonna trickle down to just a couple of people. it won't be the average biologist or game warden the OB is thinking of.

All money spent by the government comes from the taxpayers. If it was additional then it could have SAVED the taxpayers 10 mil.....but that's not how the government works.
